SwiftData Versioning with Top-Level Models
If an app is using top-level models, meaning they exist outside the VersionedSchema enum, is it safe to keep them outside of the VersionedSchema enum and use a migration plan for simple migrations. Moving the models within the VersionedSchema enum I believe would change the identity of the models and result in data being lost, although correct me if I'm wrong in that statement. The need presently is just to add another variable to the model and then set that variable within the init function: var updateId = UUID() The app is presently in TestFlight although I'd like to preserve data for users that are currently using the app. The data within SwiftData is synchronized with CloudKit and so I'd also like to avoid any impact to synchronization. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

SwiftData crashes on fetchHistory
Hi, would it be possible that instead of crashing when calling fetchHistory that function simply throws an error instead? fetchHistory seems to crash when it cannot understand the models if they are not compatible etc… which is understandable, but it makes it really difficult to handle and debug, there's not a lot of details, and honestly I would just rather that it throws an error and let me ignore a history entry that might be useless rather than crashing the entire app. Thank you!

CK WebServices getting 500 Internal Error
Hello, If I want to modify records in my public database, this works fine. However, if I change from public to private in the requesturl, I get the response: "500 - Internal Error". According to the CK WebService Reference, it is possible to access the private database. Could someone explain to me if it is really an internal error and if it could be fixed by Apple, since I would like to access my own private database with the server-to-server key. Thanks in advance.

NSPersistentCloudKitContainer in duplicate processes
I have a single multiplatform application that I use NSPersistentCloudKitContainer on. This works great, except I noticed when I open two instances of the same process (not windows) on the same computer, which share the same store, data duplication and "Metadata Inconsistency" errors start appearing. This answer (https://stackoverflow.com/a/67243833) says this is not supported with NSPersistentCloudKitContainer. Is this indeed true? If it isn't allowed, is the only solution to disable multiple instances of the process via a lock file? I was thinking one could somehow coordinate a single "leader" process that syncs to the cloud, with the others using NSPersistentContainer, but this would be complicated when the "leader" process terminates. Currently, it seems iPad split views are new windows, not processes -- but overall I'm still curious :0 Thank you!

CloudKit it writes to development container, not Production
I have an app that I signed and distribute between some internal testflight users. Potentially I want to invite some 'Public' beta testers which don't need to validate (_World have read rights in the public database) Question: Do I need to have a working public CloudKit , when users are invited through TestFlight, or are they going to test on the development container? I understand that when I invite beta-tester without authorization (external testers) they cannot access the developer container, so therefore I need to have the production CloudKit container up and running. I have tried to populate the public production container, but for whatever reason my upload app still goes to the development container. I have archived the app, and tried, but no luck. I let xcode manage my certificates/profiles. but what do I need to change to be able to use my upload file to upload the production container, instead of the development. I tried: init() { container = CKContainer(identifier: "iCloud.com.xxxx.xxxx") publicDB = container.publicCloudDatabase I got no error in the console, but data is always populated to the development database, instead the production. I tried to create a provisioning profile, but for some reason Xcode doesn't like it. Tried to create one a different provisioning profile manual through the developer portal, for the app. but xcode doesn't want to use that, and mentions that the requirement are already in place. What can I check/do to solve this.

SwiftData "Auto Inserts" array into ModelContext
Definitely one of the stranger quirks of SwiftData I've come across. I have a ScriptView that shows Line entities related to a Production, and a TextEnterScriptView that’s presented in a sheet to input text. I’m noticing that every time I type in the TextEditor within TextEnterScriptView, a new Line shows up in ScriptView — even though I haven’t explicitly inserted it into the modelContext. I'm quite confused because even though I’m only assigning a new Line to a local @State array in TextEnterScriptView, every keystroke in the TextEditor causes a duplicate Line to appear in ScriptView. In other words, Why is SwiftData creating new Line entities every time I type in the TextEditor, even though I’m only assigning to a local @State array and not explicitly inserting them into the modelContext? AppMigrationKit future plans
In the future, is there any plans to have AppMigrationKit for macOS-Windows cross transfers (or Linux, ChromeOS, HarmonyOS NEXT, etc)? Additionally, will the migration framework remain just iOS <-> Android or will it extend to Windows tablets, ChromeOS Tablets, HarmonyOS NEXT, KaiOS, Series 30+, Linux mobile, etc.

Are data in an iCloud NSUbiquitousKeyValueStore directly available at app launch on another device?
Hello, I'm planning to had an onboarding to one of my apps. I am thinking about a way for a user to not see the onboarding again if he installs the app on another device. So for example, the user completes the onboarding on its iPhone, then downloads the app on its iPad and launch it, he doesn't see the onboarding a second time. I thought about using iCloud NSUbiquitousKeyValueStored to store the onboarding completion state. But I'm not sure when the data is synced to the other device logged into the same Apple account: Immediately even if the app is not installed on the other device (independent from the app, only iCloud thing)? At the same time as the app install on the other device? After the app is first launched on the other device? Of course synchronisation will depend on the Internet connection, speed, etc. so the app should handle the case where the data is not here but what would be the best case scenario? Thank you, Axel

CKSyncEngine on macOS: Automatic Fetch Extremely Slow Compared to iOS
Hi everyone, We’re currently using CKSyncEngine to sync all our locally persisted data across user devices (iOS and macOS) via iCloud. We’ve noticed something strange and reproducible: On iOS, when the CKSyncEngine is initialized with manual sync behavior, both manual calls to fetchChanges() and sendChanges() happen nearly instantly (usually within seconds). Automatic syncing is also very fast. On macOS, when the CKSyncEngine is initialized with manual sync behavior, fetchChanges() and sendChanges() are also fast and responsive. However, once CKSyncEngine is initialized with automatic syncing enabled on macOS: sendChanges() still appears to transmit changes immediately. But automatic fetching becomes significantly slower — often taking minutes to pick up changes from the cloud, even when new data is already available. Even manual calls to fetchChanges() behave as if they’re throttled or delayed, rather than performing an immediate fetch. Our questions: Is this delay in automatic (and post-automatic manual) fetch behavior on macOS expected, or possibly a bug? Are there specific macOS constraints that impact CKSyncEngine differently than on iOS? Once CKSyncEngine has been initialized in automatic mode, is fetchChanges() no longer treated as a truly manual trigger? Is there a recommended workaround to enable fast sync behavior on macOS — for example, by sticking to manual sync configuration and triggering sync using a CKSubscription-based mechanism when remote changes occur? Any guidance, clarification, or experiences from other developers (or Apple engineers) would be greatly appreciated — especially regarding maintaining parity between iOS and macOS sync performance. Naming Collision Between Model Attribute and Enum Case in SwiftData and CloudKit
There is a conflict in SwiftData (specifically when synced with CloudKit) when a @Model attribute shares the same name as a case within its assigned enum type. When this occurs, accessing the attribute on a model instance consistently returns the value corresponding to the enum case name, rather than the actual value persisted in the database. Steps to Reproduce Define an enumeration (e.g., Status) with a case that matches a planned property name (e.g., case status). Create a SwiftData @Model that uses this enum. Name the property in the model the same as the enum case. Attempt to save and then retrieve the value. When I attempt to insert an annotation, I got SwiftData/PersistentModel.swift:559: Fatal error: This KeyPath does not appear to relate AnnotationData to anything - \AnnotationData.groups It gets more suspicious when restart the app and try again, the above error end with "AnnotationData.history", and if I tried again the above error end with "AnnotationData.from"... and so on. No matter how my app stop working.

CloudKit Server-to-Server Authentication Fails with 401 Error
I'm trying to set up server-to-server authentication with CloudKit Web Services, but keep getting AUTHENTICATION_FAILED errors. I've tried multiple environment settings and debugging approaches without success. What I've Tried I created a Swift script to test the connection. Are there specific container permissions needed for server-to-server keys? Could there be an issue with how the private key is formatted or processed? SwiftData migration crashes when working with relationships
The following complex migration consistently crashes the app with the following error: SwiftData/PersistentModel.swift:726: Fatal error: What kind of backing data is this? SwiftData._KKMDBackingData<SwiftDataMigration.ItemSchemaV1.ItemList> My app relies on a complex migration that involves these optional 1 to n relationships. Theoretically I could not assign the relationships in the willMigrate block but afterwards I am not able to tell which list and items belonged together. The NSPersistentCloudKitContainer synchronization between core data and iCloud was working fine with phone 15.1. Safari App Extension fails to connect to CloudKit daemon (cloudd) with XPC communication errors -- CKErrorDomain Code=6 / NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=4099 – Unable to connect to CloudKit daemon
I'm working on a macOS app with a Safari web extension. I'm trying to share a SwiftData model between devices using CloudKit synchronization. I am able to get synchronization in the main app on the same device, CloudKit sync works correctly — changes appear in the CloudKit Dashboard under com.apple.coredata.cloudkit.zone. However, in the Safari App Extension, data is saved locally and persists across launches, but never syncs to CloudKit. I have followed the recommended practices for configuring the App Group and entitlements, but the issue persists. Questions: Is there an official limitation preventing Safari App Extensions from connecting to the CloudKit daemon (cloudd)? If not, what entitlements or configuration changes are required for a Safari App Extension to successfully sync with CloudKit? Is the xpc_error=159 from bootstrap_look_up() a known sandbox restriction for this extension type? Any guidance from Apple engineers or others who have successfully used CloudKit from a Safari App Extension would be appreciated. CloudKit: how to handle CKError partialFailure when using NSPersistentCloudKitContainer?
I'm using NSPersistentCloudKitContainer with Core Data and I receive errors because my iCloud space is full. How to get PersistentIdentifier from a model created in a transaction?
I have a ModelActor that creates a hierarchy of models and returns a PersistentIdentifier for the root. I'd like to do that in a transaction, but I don't know of a good method of getting that identifier if the models are created in a transaction. For instance, an overly simple example: func createItem(timestamp: Date) throws -> PersistentIdentifier { try modelContext.transaction { let item = Item(timestamp: timestamp) modelContext.insert(item) } // how to return item.persistentModelID? } I can't return the item.persistentModelID from the transaction closure and even if I could, it will be a temporary ID until after the transaction is executed. I can't create the Item outside the transaction and just have the transaction do an insert because swift will raise a data race error if you then try to return item.persistentModelID. Is there any way to do this besides a modelContext.fetch* with separate unique identifiers?

Key-value storage will not sync data past a certain size
I have an app which uses key-value storage and will not sync data past a certain size -- meaning that device "A" will send the data to the cloud but device "B" will never receive the updated data. Device "B" will receive the NSUbiquitousKeyValueStoreDidChangeExternallyNotification that the KVS changed but the data is empty. The data in in the KVS is comprised of 4 keys, each containing a value of NSData generated by NSKeyedArchiver. The NSData is comprised of property-list data types (e.g. numbers, strings, dates, etc.) I've verified that the KVS meets the limits of: A total of 1 MB per app, with a per-key limit of 1 MB A per-key value size limit of 1 MB, and a maximum of 1024 keys A maximum length for key strings is 64 bytes using UTF8 encoding Also, the app has never received an NSUbiquitousKeyValueStoreQuotaViolationChange notification. Of the 4 keys, 3 of them contain no more than 30 KB of data each. However, one of the keys can contain as much as 160 KB of data which will not sync to another device. Strangely, if I constrain the data to 100 KB it will work, however, that is not ideal as it is a fraction of the necessary data. I don't see any errors in the debug log either. Any suggestions on what to try next to get this working?

SwiftData Versioning with Top-Level Models
If an app is using top-level models, meaning they exist outside the VersionedSchema enum, is it safe to keep them outside of the VersionedSchema enum and use a migration plan for simple migrations. Moving the models within the VersionedSchema enum I believe would change the identity of the models and result in data being lost, although correct me if I'm wrong in that statement. The need presently is just to add another variable to the model and then set that variable within the init function: var updateId = UUID() The app is presently in TestFlight although I'd like to preserve data for users that are currently using the app. The data within SwiftData is synchronized with CloudKit and so I'd also like to avoid any impact to synchronization. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

SwiftData crashes on fetchHistory
Hi, would it be possible that instead of crashing when calling fetchHistory that function simply throws an error instead? fetchHistory seems to crash when it cannot understand the models if they are not compatible etc… which is understandable, but it makes it really difficult to handle and debug, there's not a lot of details, and honestly I would just rather that it throws an error and let me ignore a history entry that might be useless rather than crashing the entire app. Thank you!

CK WebServices getting 500 Internal Error
Hello, If I want to modify records in my public database, this works fine. However, if I change from public to private in the requesturl, I get the response: "500 - Internal Error". According to the CK WebService Reference, it is possible to access the private database. Could someone explain to me if it is really an internal error and if it could be fixed by Apple, since I would like to access my own private database with the server-to-server key. Thanks in advance.

NSPersistentCloudKitContainer in duplicate processes
I have a single multiplatform application that I use NSPersistentCloudKitContainer on. This works great, except I noticed when I open two instances of the same process (not windows) on the same computer, which share the same store, data duplication and "Metadata Inconsistency" errors start appearing. This answer (https://stackoverflow.com/a/67243833) says this is not supported with NSPersistentCloudKitContainer. Is this indeed true? If it isn't allowed, is the only solution to disable multiple instances of the process via a lock file? I was thinking one could somehow coordinate a single "leader" process that syncs to the cloud, with the others using NSPersistentContainer, but this would be complicated when the "leader" process terminates. Currently, it seems iPad split views are new windows, not processes -- but overall I'm still curious :0 Thank you!

CloudKit it writes to development container, not Production
I have an app that I signed and distribute between some internal testflight users. Potentially I want to invite some 'Public' beta testers which don't need to validate (_World have read rights in the public database) Question: Do I need to have a working public CloudKit , when users are invited through TestFlight, or are they going to test on the development container? I understand that when I invite beta-tester without authorization (external testers) they cannot access the developer container, so therefore I need to have the production CloudKit container up and running. I have tried to populate the public production container, but for whatever reason my upload app still goes to the development container. I have archived the app, and tried, but no luck. I let xcode manage my certificates/profiles. but what do I need to change to be able to use my upload file to upload the production container, instead of the development. I tried: init() { container = CKContainer(identifier: "iCloud.com.xxxx.xxxx") publicDB = container.publicCloudDatabase I got no error in the console, but data is always populated to the development database, instead the production. I tried to create a provisioning profile, but for some reason Xcode doesn't like it. Tried to create one a different provisioning profile manual through the developer portal, for the app. but xcode doesn't want to use that, and mentions that the requirement are already in place. What can I check/do to solve this.

SwiftData "Auto Inserts" array into ModelContext
Definitely one of the stranger quirks of SwiftData I've come across. I have a ScriptView that shows Line entities related to a Production, and a TextEnterScriptView that’s presented in a sheet to input text. I’m noticing that every time I type in the TextEditor within TextEnterScriptView, a new Line shows up in ScriptView — even though I haven’t explicitly inserted it into the modelContext. I'm quite confused because even though I’m only assigning a new Line to a local @State array in TextEnterScriptView, every keystroke in the TextEditor causes a duplicate Line to appear in ScriptView. In other words, Why is SwiftData creating new Line entities every time I type in the TextEditor, even though I’m only assigning to a local @State array and not explicitly inserting them into the modelContext? In the future, is there any plans to have AppMigrationKit for macOS-Windows cross transfers (or Linux, ChromeOS, HarmonyOS NEXT, etc)? Additionally, will the migration framework remain just iOS <-> Android or will it extend to Windows tablets, ChromeOS Tablets, HarmonyOS NEXT, KaiOS, Series 30+, Linux mobile, etc.

Are data in an iCloud NSUbiquitousKeyValueStore directly available at app launch on another device?
Hello, I'm planning to had an onboarding to one of my apps. I am thinking about a way for a user to not see the onboarding again if he installs the app on another device. So for example, the user completes the onboarding on its iPhone, then downloads the app on its iPad and launch it, he doesn't see the onboarding a second time. I thought about using iCloud NSUbiquitousKeyValueStored to store the onboarding completion state. But I'm not sure when the data is synced to the other device logged into the same Apple account: Immediately even if the app is not installed on the other device (independent from the app, only iCloud thing)? At the same time as the app install on the other device? After the app is first launched on the other device? Of course synchronisation will depend on the Internet connection, speed, etc. so the app should handle the case where the data is not here but what would be the best case scenario? Thank you, Axel

CKSyncEngine on macOS: Automatic Fetch Extremely Slow Compared to iOS
Hi everyone, We’re currently using CKSyncEngine to sync all our locally persisted data across user devices (iOS and macOS) via iCloud. We’ve noticed something strange and reproducible: On iOS, when the CKSyncEngine is initialized with manual sync behavior, both manual calls to fetchChanges() and sendChanges() happen nearly instantly (usually within seconds). Automatic syncing is also very fast. On macOS, when the CKSyncEngine is initialized with manual sync behavior, fetchChanges() and sendChanges() are also fast and responsive. However, once CKSyncEngine is initialized with automatic syncing enabled on macOS: sendChanges() still appears to transmit changes immediately. But automatic fetching becomes significantly slower — often taking minutes to pick up changes from the cloud, even when new data is already available. Even manual calls to fetchChanges() behave as if they’re throttled or delayed, rather than performing an immediate fetch. Our questions: Is this delay in automatic (and post-automatic manual) fetch behavior on macOS expected, or possibly a bug? Are there specific macOS constraints that impact CKSyncEngine differently than on iOS? Once CKSyncEngine has been initialized in automatic mode, is fetchChanges() no longer treated as a truly manual trigger? Is there a recommended workaround to enable fast sync behavior on macOS — for example, by sticking to manual sync configuration and triggering sync using a CKSubscription-based mechanism when remote changes occur? Any guidance, clarification, or experiences from other developers (or Apple engineers) would be greatly appreciated — especially regarding maintaining parity between iOS and macOS sync performance. SwiftData migration crashes when working with relationships
The following complex migration consistently crashes the app with the following error: SwiftData/PersistentModel.swift:726: Fatal error: What kind of backing data is this? NSPersistentCloudKitContainer - Import failed with error: Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=4864
The NSPersistentCloudKitContainer synchronization between core data and iCloud was working fine with phone 15.1. Safari App Extension fails to connect to CloudKit daemon (cloudd) with XPC communication errors -- CKErrorDomain Code=6 / NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=4099 – Unable to connect to CloudKit daemon
I'm working on a macOS app with a Safari web extension. I'm trying to share a SwiftData model between devices using CloudKit synchronization. I am able to get synchronization in the main app on the same device, CloudKit sync works correctly — changes appear in the CloudKit Dashboard under com.apple.coredata.cloudkit.zone. However, in the Safari App Extension, data is saved locally and persists across launches, but never syncs to CloudKit. I have followed the recommended practices for configuring the App Group and entitlements, but the issue persists. Questions: Is there an official limitation preventing Safari App Extensions from connecting to the CloudKit daemon (cloudd)? If not, what entitlements or configuration changes are required for a Safari App Extension to successfully sync with CloudKit? Is the xpc_error=159 from bootstrap_look_up() a known sandbox restriction for this extension type? Any guidance from Apple engineers or others who have successfully used CloudKit from a Safari App Extension would be appreciated. What I’ve confirmed: The extension’s .entitlements includes: com.apple.security.app-sandbox com.apple.developer.icloud-services CloudKit com.apple.developer.icloud-container-identifiers iCloud.dev.example.myapp Same iCloud container ID for both app and extension CloudKit container exists and is initialized in CloudKit Console Running in :Sandbox environment during development Database name in SwiftData matches container identifier (without the iCloud. prefix) The extension’s codesign output shows correct entitlements App Group is configured (although in this case, extension and app use separate stores intentionally) Observed behavior in Console.app logs: CloudKit sync engine initializes in the extension XPC activities are registered for import/export: _xpc_activity_register: com.apple.coredata.cloudkit.activity.export. xpc_activity_set_criteria: ... import. Then a bootstrap lookup fails: failed to do a bootstrap look-up: xpc_error=[159: Unknown error: 159] CloudKit daemon connection error: CKErrorDomain Code=6 "Error connecting to CloudKit daemon" NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=4099 There is no “Will attempt to upload transactions” or “Upload succeeded” logs are ever seen. CloudKit: how to handle CKError partialFailure when using NSPersistentCloudKitContainer?
I'm using NSPersistentCloudKitContainer with Core Data and I receive errors because my iCloud space is full. The errors printed are the following: <CKError 0x280df8e40: "Quota Exceeded" (25/2035); server message = "Quota exceeded"; op = 61846C533467A5DF; uuid = 6A144513-033F-42C2-9E27-693548EF2150; Retry after 342.0 seconds>. I want to inform the user about this issue, but I can't find a way to access the details of the error. I'm listening to NSPersistentCloudKitContainer.eventChangedNotification, I receive a error of type .partialFailure. But when I want to access the underlying errors, the partialErrorsByItemID property on the error is nil. icloud imap lsub not following rfc 3501
LSUB always returns all the subscribed folders. For example lsub "" "test/*" returns a list of all the folders and not just subscribed folders that are subfolders of test. How to get PersistentIdentifier from a model created in a transaction?
I have a ModelActor that creates a hierarchy of models and returns a PersistentIdentifier for the root. I'd like to do that in a transaction, but I don't know of a good method of getting that identifier if the models are created in a transaction. For instance, an overly simple example: func createItem(timestamp: Date) throws -> PersistentIdentifier { try modelContext.transaction { let item = Item(timestamp: timestamp) modelContext.insert(item) } // how to return item.persistentModelID? } I can't return the item.persistentModelID from the transaction closure and even if I could, it will be a temporary ID until after the transaction is executed. I can't create the Item outside the transaction and just have the transaction do an insert because swift will raise a data race error if you then try to return item.persistentModelID. Is there any way to do this besides a modelContext.fetch* with separate unique identifiers?

Key-value storage will not sync data past a certain size
I have an app which uses key-value storage and will not sync data past a certain size -- meaning that device "A" will send the data to the cloud but device "B" will never receive the updated data. Device "B" will receive the NSUbiquitousKeyValueStoreDidChangeExternallyNotification that the KVS changed but the data is empty. The data in in the KVS is comprised of 4 keys, each containing a value of NSData generated by NSKeyedArchiver. The NSData is comprised of property-list data types (e.g. numbers, strings, dates, etc.) I've verified that the KVS meets the limits of: A total of 1 MB per app, with a per-key limit of 1 MB A per-key value size limit of 1 MB, and a maximum of 1024 keys A maximum length for key strings is 64 bytes using UTF8 encoding Also, the app has never received an NSUbiquitousKeyValueStoreQuotaViolationChange notification. Of the 4 keys, 3 of them contain no more than 30 KB of data each. However, one of the keys can contain as much as 160 KB of data which will not sync to another device. Strangely, if I constrain the data to 100 KB it will work, however, that is not ideal as it is a fraction of the necessary data. I don't see any errors in the debug log either. Any suggestions on what to try next to get this working?
