Does OLED burn-in affect iPad Pro displays, and should I implement a screen saver in my always-on app?
Hi everyone, I’m developing an iPad app that will be running continuously with the screen always on — similar to a restaurant ordering system. I understand that some of the newer iPad Pro models are equipped with OLED displays. I'm concerned about the potential risk of screen burn-in due to static UI elements being displayed for extended periods. Does burn-in occur on the OLED iPad Pro models under such usage? Would it be advisable to implement a screen saver or periodically animate/change parts of the UI to prevent this? Any insights or best practices would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

NSScreen's maximumExtendedDynamicRangeColorComponentValue does not seem to provide the proper value after sleep/wake on third party HDR displays even when there is EDR content on screen in macOS Tahoe
The maximumExtendedDynamicRangeColorComponentValue should provide some value between 1.0 and maximumPotentialExtendedDynamicRangeColorComponentValue depending on the available EDR headroom if there is any content on-screen that uses EDR. This works fine in most scenarios but in macOS 26 Tahoe (including in 26.2) this seemingly breaks down when a third party external display is in HDR mode and the Mac goes to sleep and wakes up. After wake only a value of 1.0 is provided by the third party external display's NSScreen object, no matter what (although when the SDR peak brightness is being changed using the brightness slider, didChangeScreenParametersNotification is firing and the system should provide a proper updated headroom value). This makes dynamic tone-mapping that adapts to actual screen brightness impossible. Everything works fine in Sequoia. In Tahoe the user needs to turn off HDR, then go through a sleep/wake cycle and turn HDR back on to have this fixed, which is obviously not a sustainable workaround.

Game Porting Toolkit: Any .exe exits immediately with no output
Hi Apple & devs, I'm trying to test various Windows .exe files using the Game Porting Toolkit (GPTK), but I’m hitting a wall: no matter what .exe I try, the command returns instantly with no output — no error, no logs, nothing. Here's what I'm doing: I'm using macOS Sequioa 15.5 on M1 macbook pro. I installed gameportingtoolkt GPTK 2.1 through brew from gcenx: brew install gcenx/wine/game-porting-toolkit When I run any .exe using GPTK's wine64, like this, e.g. with steam user@JMacBook-Pro / % WINEPREFIX=~/wine_prefix /usr/local/bin/gameportingtoolkit 'C:\SteamSetup.exe' --verbose user@JMacBook-Pro / % Immediate exit without any return code, output, nor errors. No output, no crash, no logs. Same result with simple test apps Running with WINEDEBUG=+all (still no output) Even running wine64 does the same thing. I’ve tried: Removing and reinstalling GPTK Creating a fresh WINEPREFIX Checking /tmp and ~/Library/Logs for logs — nothing Has anyone else experienced this or have any idea how to debug it? Is there ANY Apple support for this?? Thanks in advance.

Is migrating from ARView to RealityView recommended?
We're using RealityKit to create a science education AR app for iOS, iPadOS, and visionOS. In the WWDC25 session video "Bring your SceneKit project to RealityKit" https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2025/288 at 8:15, it's explained that when using RealityKit, RealityView should be used in all cases, whereas in the past, SceneKit required SCNView, SceneView, or ARSCNView, depending on an app's requirements. Because the initial development of our app on iOS predates iOS 18's RealityView, our app currently uses ARView to render RealityKit AR content on iOS and iPadOS. Is it recommended that we migrate to RealityView, or can we safely continue using our existing ARView implementation? We'd prefer to avoid unnecessary development cost. If migrating from ARView to RealityView is recommended, what specific benefits should we expect from this transition? Thank you.

Is Metal usable from Swift 6?
Hello ladies and gentlemen, I'm writing a simple renderer on the main actor using Metal and Swift 6. I am at the stage now where I want to create a render pipeline state using asynchronous API: @MainActor class Renderer { let opaqueMeshRPS: MTLRenderPipelineState init(/*...*/) async throws { let descriptor = MTLRenderPipelineDescriptor() // ... opaqueMeshRPS = try await device.makeRenderPipelineState(descriptor: descriptor) } } I get a compilation error if try to use the asynchronous version of the makeRenderPipelineState method: Non-sendable type 'any MTLRenderPipelineState' returned by implicitly asynchronous call to nonisolated function cannot cross actor boundary Which is understandable, since MTLRenderPipelineState is not Sendable. But it looks like no matter where or how I try to access this method, I just can't do it - you have this API, but you can't use it, you can only use the synchronous versions. Am I missing something or is Metal just not usable with Swift 6 right now?

How to load a USDZ inside of a Reality Composer Pro package as ModelEntity in RealityKit ?
I need a MeshResource from ModelEntity to generate a box collider, but ModelEntity fails to load USDZ files from the Reality Composer Pro (RCP) bundle. This code works for loading an Entity: // Successfully loads as generic Entity previewEntity = try await Entity(named: fileName, in: realityKitContentBundle) But this fails when trying to load as ModelEntity: // Fails to load as ModelEntity modelEntity = try await ModelEntity(named: fileName, in: realityKitContentBundle) I found this thread mentioning: "You'll likely go from USDZ to Entity which contains a MeshResource when you load/init the USDZ file." But it doesn't explain ​how to actually extract the MeshResource. Could anyone advise: How to properly load USDZ files as ModelEntity from RCP bundles? How to extract MeshResource from a successfully loaded Entity? Alternative approaches to generate box colliders if direct extraction isn't possible? Sample code for extraction or workarounds would be greatly appreciated!

Distortion Artifacts on VisionOS When Rendering Opaque/Alpha Clipped Foliage in URP (Unity 6.0, Metal)
I'm running into a persistent visual issue while deploying a floral corridor scene to Apple Vision Pro using Unity 6.0 with URP and Metal. The issue only appears on the Vision Pro device — everything looks fine in the Unity Editor. Issue Description When the frame rate drops to around 60–70 FPS, noticeable distortion artifacts appear around the edges of foliage models. It seems like the background meshes (behind the plants) get warped and leak through the edges of the foliage. Although this is most visible around the leaves, even solid objects like standard URP wall or box models show distorted edges when the issue occurs. All the foliage uses Opaque or Alpha Clipping materials. Things I've Tried Changing the foliage materials to Transparent mode —distortion around edges disappears, but using Transparent for a large number of foliage assets is not ideal for performance or sorting complexity. Reducing the number of foliage objects — with only a few plants in the scene and the frame rate staying around 100 FPS, the distortion disappears. However, this isn’t a practical solution for a full environment. Possible Cause? I came across this note in the Unity documentation: "Ensure depth-buffer for each pixel is non-zero - on visionOS, the depth buffer is used for reprojection. To ensure visual effects like skyboxes and shaders are displayed beautifully, ensure that some value is written to the depth for each pixel." Could this be related to the issue? Is it possible that Alpha Clipping with low pixel coverage leads to some pixels not writing to the depth buffer, which then causes problems during Vision Pro’s reprojection or foveated rendering? However, even when I disable Alpha Clipping entirely, the distortion issue still persists, so it may not be solely caused by clipping itself. Project Setup Unity 6.0 (URP) Depth Texture: Enable Using Metal as the graphics backend Running on real Vision Pro hardware (not simulator) Any advice on how to avoid these distortion issues on Vision Pro would be greatly appreciated. PhotogrammetrySession fails with internal errors 4011 / 4012 when using iOS Object Capture (Area Mode) images
Hi all, I’m running into an issue when trying to reconstruct a 3D model using PhotogrammetrySession on macOS from a set of images captured via the iOS Object Capture sample app, specifically in Area mode. Apple API "CGDisplayCopyAllDisplayModes provides resolution list which does not match with system resolution for the external monitors.
Our application is trying to read all resolutions of an external monitor. We have observed that, for the external monitor there is a mismatch in resolution list in our application and the resolution list in system settings. We are using the apple API "CGDisplayCopyAllDisplayModes" to read the resolutions.

ShaderGraphMaterial.getParameter(handle:) always return nil, is this expected behavior?

Threadgroup memory for fragment shader
Hello I am trying to get thread group memory access in fragment shader. In essence, I would like to have all the fragments in a tile to bitwiseOR some value. My idea was to use simd_or across the SIMD group, then make each SIMD group thread 0 to atomic or the value into thread group memory. Finally very first thread of the tile would be tasked with writing the value down to texture with write access. Now, I can allocate the thread group memory argument to the fragment function all right. MTLRenderEncoder has setThreadgroupMemoryLength call, which I am using the following way [renderEncoder setThreagroupMemoryLength: 16 offset: 0 atIndex:0] Unfortunately, all I am getting is the following error (runtime assertion) -[MTLDebugRenderCommandEncoder setThreadgroupMemoryLength:offset:atIndex:]:3487: failed assertion Set Threadgroup Memory Length Validation offset + length(16) must be <= threadgroupMemoryLength(0).` What I am doing wrong? How I can get thread group memory in the fragment shader? I know I could use tile shading and compute function but the problem is that here I really like to use fragment stuff. Will be grateful for help.

RealityKit not behaving as expected
This week, I developed a small multiplatform RealityKit project. I also created a demo scene in Reality Composer Pro. Afterward, I imported the local package into the project. Running the project on macOS works perfectly. However, when I tried to run it on my iPhone, I encountered a permission error indicating that it couldn’t read the package. This seems unusual to me because I assumed that the dependency is bundled into the binary file. In an attempt to resolve the issue, I pushed the RCP package to GitHub, hoping it would work. Fortunately, everything compiles successfully now, but the loading time is significantly long, and the animations don’t play on tap gestures. Could someone please help me identify the root cause of this problem?

Animating a RealityComposerPro shader's uniform input value
I'm trying to build a Shader in "Reality Composer Pro" that updates from a start time. Initially I tried the following: The idea was that when the startTime was 0, the output would be 0, but then I would set startTime from within code and this would be compared with the current GPU time, and difference used to drive another part of the shader graph: if let testEntity = root.findEntity(named: "Test"), var shaderGraphMaterial = testEntity.components[ModelComponent.self]?.materials.first as? Will OpenGL API and Drivers be removed after appleOS 26?
Hi, I am a Multimedia and Graphics researcher and I am wondering if OpenGL API and drivers will be removed after appleOS 26? macOS 26 iOS 26 iPadOS 26 visionOS 26 I am asking this because most of the libraries I use depends on OpenGL. Like CGAL, libigl, immediate mode ui, nanovg, nanogui, bullet physics. Transitioning from Vulkan and metal while using and learning those libraries is just not viable. I would like to ask you that. I am the sole developer and I just want to ask you that. Regards.

How to customize shader code for visionos ?
Hello experts, I'm trying to implement a material with custom shader code, but I saw that visionOS doesn't allow you to inject custom Metal functions or use CustomMaterial like iOS/macOS, nor can you directly write Metal Shading Language (.metal) and use it through ShaderGraphMaterial. So my question is, if i want to implement your own shader code, how should i do it?

my game is very big when I upload my game in the app store
i have a game that i upload it in the app store that my game size is 3 gigaByte but when I download it, it show that the really size is about 100 megaByte, i upload the game in google app is given me the real size, so the problem i think is when it get out the xcode, maybe some one can give me i clue for what is going on. my game was made by unity2020. if that helps.
