SpriteKit FPS drops significantly on iOS 26.3.1 when touching screen, even in minimal scene
Title: SpriteKit FPS drops significantly on iOS 26.3.1 when touching screen, even in a minimal scene Summary: On a real device running iOS 26.3.1, FPS drops significantly in a very simple SpriteKit scene when touching or moving a finger on the screen. This happens even with a minimal setup where update(_:), touchesBegan, and touchesMoved are not overridden. Because the issue reproduces in a minimal scene, I suspect a performance regression in SpriteKit and/or iOS rather than in app-specific logic. Environment: OS: iOS 26.3.1 Device: iPhone 12 Xcode: 26.3 Build Configuration: Release Framework: SpriteKit FPS measurement: SKView.showsFPS = true Steps to Reproduce: Present a minimal SpriteKit scene. Enable SKView.showsFPS = true. Add only a very small number of nodes to the scene. Do not override update(_:), touchesBegan, or touchesMoved. Repeatedly tap the screen or move a finger around. Actual Result: The scene stays around 60 FPS when idle. FPS drops significantly when touching or moving a finger on the screen. The drop appears to get worse as the node count increases. The issue still reproduces even if touchesMoved is empty or not overridden at all. Expected Result: A minimal scene like this should remain close to 60 FPS even while touching the screen. At minimum, FPS should not drop this much when the app does not perform meaningful touch handling. Notes: Time Profiler does not point to a clear heavy app-specific function; instead, frame time worsens during touch interaction. Since this also reproduces in a minimal scene, I do not believe the root cause is only in my game logic. Similar reports exist describing SpriteKit framerate drops on recent iOS versions, including cases where the issue appears in very simple scenes. Minimal Reproducible Code: import SpriteKit final class TestScene: SKScene { override func didMove(to view: SKView) { backgroundColor = .black scaleMode = .resizeFill let textures = [ SKTexture(imageNamed: "title1"), SKTexture(imageNamed: "title2"), SKTexture(imageNamed: "title3"), SKTexture(imageNamed: "title4"), SKTexture(imageNamed: "title5"), ] let node = SKSpriteNode(texture: textures[0]) node.position = CGPoint(x: size.width * 0.5, y: size.height * 0.5) addChild(node) let anim = SKAction.animate( with: textures, timePerFrame: 8.0 / 60.0, resize: false, restore: false ) node.run(.repeatForever(anim)) } } import UIKit import SpriteKit final class GameViewController: UIViewController { override func viewDidLoad() { super.viewDidLoad() let skView = SKView(frame: view.bounds) skView.showsFPS = true skView.showsNodeCount = true skView.ignoresSiblingOrder = true skView.preferredFrameRate = 60 view.addSubview(skView) let scene = TestScene(size: skView.bounds.size) skView.presentScene(scene) } }

Xcode Vulkan is opening two windows instead of one.
I'm a newbee at Vulkan and Xcode. I have my project on github https://github.com/flocela/OrangeSpider/ Whenever I run, two windows open instead of only one. I added testing, which means I have an OrangeSpider.xctestplan in the OrangeSpider/TestsOrangeSpider/ folder. This is my first time adding testing to an XCode project, so I think this may be where the problem is. I also get this error message: ViewBridge to RemoteViewService Terminated: Error Domain=com.apple.ViewBridge Code=18 "(null)" UserInfo={com.apple.ViewBridge.error.hint=this process disconnected remote view controller -- benign unless unexpected, com.apple.ViewBridge.error.description=NSViewBridgeErrorCanceled}

Anchor an Reality scene on an image anchor
Developing a prototype Vision Pro app and would like to render a 3D scene made from Reality Composer Pro on an image anchor in a RealityView. But I have no luck so far to make it work and need some guidance to move on. I got the image file stored in the assets like below: And from below is the source codes: import SwiftUI import RealityKit import RealityKitContent struct AnchorView: View { @State var imageEntity: Entity = { let anchorEntity = AnchorEntity(.image(group: "AR Resources", name: "reanchor")) return anchorEntity }() var body: some View { RealityView { content in do { // Add the initial RealityKit content if let scene = try? await Entity(named: "Scene", in: realityKitContentBundle) { imageEntity.addChild(scene) content.add(imageEntity) } } catch { print("Error occurs when adding reality view content: \(error)") } } } }

Pink screen on MTLCommandBuffer.presentDrawable.
I rewrote my graphics pipeline to use Load/Store better for clearing and don't care cases. All my tests pass, and in the Metal debugger, all the draw calls succeed. But when I present drawables (before [commandBuffer commit]) I only get a pink screen. I've tried everything I can think of: making sure the pixel formats are the same for the back buffer as my render targets, etc. But it's still pink. Could you point me in the right direction so I can fix this, or help describe why it's pink. That would be really helpful. Thank you, Brian Hapgood

Metal fails to create PSO on AMD based GPUs
Hello, Shaders in our application is written using HLSL and we rely on Metal Shader Converter to convert DXIL to Metal IR. We ran into an issue that causes metal pipeline state creation to fail when vertex stage-in function is used on AMD GPUs. Here's the error reported by Metal in Xcode output: Compiler failed with XPC_ERROR_CONNECTION_INTERRUPTED XPC_ERROR_CONNECTION_INTERRUPTED MTLCompiler: Compilation failed with XPC_ERROR_CONNECTION_INTERRUPTED on 4 try. This error suggests an unexpected interruption in the connection. Possible reasons: a crash in the compiler service, termination by the OS due to resource constraints (e.g., jetsam), a timeout in the service, or an issue with IPC. Verify system stability and check the logs for more details. Compiler failed with XPC_ERROR_CONNECTION_INVALID XPC_ERROR_CONNECTION_INVALID MTLCompiler: Compiler encountered XPC_ERROR_CONNECTION_INVALID: failed to check-in, peer may have been unloaded: mach_error=10000003 (is the OS shutting down or process jetsammed?) Compilation failed due to an interrupted connection: XPC_ERROR_CONNECTION_INTERRUPTED. This error occurred after multiple retries. which seems to indicate a internal compiler error. I have a minimal repro here: https://github.com/kcloudy0717/metal_pso_fail/tree/main, simply follow the instructions in README.

10-bit support in iPad Pro
Hi, I’m using the latest iPad Pro (13-inch) and I can see that Metal offers an rgb10a2unorm texture for rendering, but when I render a grey ramp and measure the actual luminance, I get a pattern that I would expect from an 8-bit texture (see below). Before I start ripping apart all my code, is there anything else I need to do to convince iOS to render my texture in 10-bit? I already tried setting the PixelFormat in my CMetalLayer to rgb10a2unorm, but that didn’t change anything.

How to load a USDZ inside of a Reality Composer Pro package as ModelEntity in RealityKit ?
I need a MeshResource from ModelEntity to generate a box collider, but ModelEntity fails to load USDZ files from the Reality Composer Pro (RCP) bundle. This code works for loading an Entity: // Successfully loads as generic Entity previewEntity = try await Entity(named: fileName, in: realityKitContentBundle) But this fails when trying to load as ModelEntity: // Fails to load as ModelEntity modelEntity = try await ModelEntity(named: fileName, in: realityKitContentBundle) I found this thread mentioning: "You'll likely go from USDZ to Entity which contains a MeshResource when you load/init the USDZ file." But it doesn't explain how to actually extract the MeshResource. Could anyone advise: How to properly load USDZ files as ModelEntity from RCP bundles? How to extract MeshResource from a successfully loaded Entity? Alternative approaches to generate box colliders if direct extraction isn't possible? Sample code for extraction or workarounds would be greatly appreciated!

Background GPU Access availability
I would love to use Background GPU Access to do some video processing in the background. However the documentation of BGContinuedProcessingTaskRequest.Resources.gpu clearly states: Not all devices support background GPU use. For more information, see Performing long-running tasks on iOS and iPadOS. Is there a list available of currently released devices that do (or don't) support GPU background usage? That would help to understand what part of our user base can use this feature. (And what hardware we need to test this on as developers.) For example it seems that it isn't supported on an iPad Pro M1 with the current iOS 26 beta. The simulators also seem to not support the background GPU resource. So would be great to understand what hardware is capable of using this feature!

Can you delete a MTLLibrary once shaders are placed into pipeline?
Hello, I am quite new to using the metal API and was wondering if it was common (or even possible) if you knew that, when a pipeline was created, you never needed to make another one with the same shaders again, if it is safe to release the library the was used to reference the shaders? Only asking because this is possible in other apis, but apple never mentions (as far as I have found) if this is safe or not safe to do.

SceneKit shader compile and cache issues? :(
I'm making an apple watch game and it's running so smooth and nice while developing but I ran into a showstopping problem that I wouldn't even have noticed until i deleted the app and reinstalled... Every first-run on a freshly installed copy of the game has major frame hitches as it loads assets. Every run after that has ZERO hitches and runs like butter. Even if i install a new version on top of the old one (which is why i never noticed this problem in my almost finished game) it runs smooth. Framerate issues come back if I delete and reinstall. I think it's compiling shaders or caching geometry but I haven't been able to trick it into doing the hard work during non-critical moments in the game. I've tried preloading assets in the main menu, loading at the start of the level, loading and rendering in a tiny part of the screen, rendering behind dialog boxes... it seems no matter what i can only get rid of the frame hitches after the game has been played through once... and I'm going to lose all customers on that first terrible impression even though the game is actually really good and fun when it's running properly... Any suggestions how i can prewarm/precompile the assets to avoid framerate hitches and freezes during gameplay? I thought I was so close to release but I feel this is un-shippable! I can send a link to my test flight build to anyone that wants to see the problem first hand. Also please note that I am artist-forward with a technical lean, but certainly not a real programmer, unfortunately. Jiovanie

Metal IR reference
Hello! I'm developing a GPU (shader) language, where I aim to target multiple backends with a common frontend. I wanted to avoid having to round trip through Metal, and go straight to IR just like I have with SPIRV, in order to have a fast and efficient compilation process. I've been looking for a reference page where I can read about Metals IR, and as far as I'm aware, it exists, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. Furthermore, if such a reference is available, is there also a toolkit where I can run validation on the output IR, and perhaps even run optimizations, much like spv-tools for SPIRV? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks, Gustav

scenekit is deprecated but realitykit is for special computing what should i use ?
hello i am new to apple ecosystem and development i have some coding experience with c# now i like to develop my game for iphone 16 and up(due to ability to run ai models) but i am having hard time figuring out what to use there is a lot of resources for scene-kit but on its doc page it says its deprecated so i look at the reality-kit docs and tutorials and its strictly tells how to develop for visionos and i am really confused about this since there is no tutorials that shows how to develop a game for ios with reality-kit that does not focus visionos. i just want to develop for iphone 16 and up but i cant find resources focuses at that.
