Notification interruptions
My app Balletrax is a music player for people to use while they teach ballet. Used to be you could silence notifications during use, but now the customer seems to have to know how to use Focus mode, remember to turn it on and off, and have to check the notifications one does and doesn't want to use. Is there no way to silence all notifications when the app is in use?

Playing audio live from Bluetooth headset on iPhone speaker
Hi guys, I am having issue in live-streaming audio from Bluetooth headset and playing it live on the iPhone speaker. I am able to redirect audio back to the headset but this is not what I want. The issue happens when I am trying to override output - the iPhone switches to speaker but also switches a microphone. This is example of the code: import AVFoundation class AudioRecorder { let player: AVAudioPlayerNode let engine:AVAudioEngine let audioSession:AVAudioSession let audioSessionOutput:AVAudioSession init() { self.player = AVAudioPlayerNode() self.engine = AVAudioEngine() self.audioSession = AVAudioSession.sharedInstance() self.audioSessionOutput = AVAudioSession() do { try self.audioSession.setCategory(AVAudioSession.Category.playAndRecord, options: [.defaultToSpeaker]) try self.audioSessionOutput.setCategory(AVAudioSession.Category.playAndRecord, options: [.allowBluetooth]) // enables Bluetooth HFP profile try self.audioSession.setMode(AVAudioSession.Mode.default) try self.audioSession.setActive(true) // try self.audioSession.overrideOutputAudioPort(.speaker) // doens't work } catch { print(error) } let input = self.engine.inputNode self.engine.attach(self.player) let bus = 0 let inputFormat = input.inputFormat(forBus: bus) self.engine.connect(self.player, to: engine.mainMixerNode, format: inputFormat) input.installTap(onBus: bus, bufferSize: 512, format: inputFormat) { (buffer, time) -> Void in self.player.scheduleBuffer(buffer) print(buffer) } } public func start() { try! self.engine.start() self.player.play() } public func stop() { self.player.stop() self.engine.stop() } } I am not sure if this is a bug or not. Can somebody point me into the right direction? I there a way to design a custom audio routing? I would also appreciate some good documentation besides AVFoundation docs.

MusicKit - Skipping Forwards or Backwards does not update
Hello everyone, I am working on an app that allows you to review your own music using Apple Music. Currently I am running into an issue with the skipping forwards and backwards outside of the app. How it should work: When skipping forward or backwards on the lock or home screen of an iPhone, the next or previous song on an album should play and the information should change to reflect that in the app. If you play a song in Apple Music, you can see a Now Playing view in the lock screen. When you skip forward or backwards, it will do either action and it would reflect that when you see a little frequency icon on artwork image of a song. What it's doing: When skipping forward or backwards on the lock or home screen of an iPhone, the next or previous song is reflected outside of the app, but not in the app. When skipping a song outside of the app, it works correctly to head to the next song. But when I return to the app, it is not reflected NOTE: I am not using MusicKit variables such as Track, Album to display the songs. Since I want to grab the songs and review them I need a rating so I created my own that grabs the MusicItemID, name, artist(s), etc. NOTE: I am using ApplicationMusicPlayer.shared Is there a way to get the song to reflect in my app? (If its easier, a simple example of it would be nice. No need to create an entire xprod file)

AVFoundationErrorDomain Code=-11819 in AVPlayer – Causes & Fixes?
We are encountering an issue where AVPlayer throws the error: Error Domain=AVFoundationErrorDomain Code=-11819 "Cannot Complete Action" > Underlying Error Domain[(null)]:Code[0]:Desc[(null)] This error seems to occur intermittently during video playback, especially after extended usage or when switching between different streams. We observe Error 11819 (AVFoundationErrorDomain) in Conviva platform that some of our users experience it but we couldn't reproduce it so far and we’re need support to determine the root cause and/or best practices to prevent it. Some questions we have: What typically triggers this error? Could it be related to memory/resource constraints, network instability, or backgrounding? Are there any recommended ways to handle or recover from this error gracefully? Any insights or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

AVPlayer error: Too many open files
For some users in production, there's a high probability that after launching the App, using AVPlayer to play any local audio resources results in the following error. Restarting the App doesn't help. issue: [error: Error Domain=AVFoundationErrorDomain Code=-11800 "这项操作无法完成" UserInfo={NSLocalizedFailureReason=发生未知错误(24), NSLocalizedDescription=这项操作无法完成, NSUnderlyingError=0x30311f270 {Error Domain=NSPOSIXErrorDomain Code=24 "Too many open files"}} I've checked the code, and there aren't actually multiple AVPlayers playing simultaneously. What could be causing this?

AVAudioSession automatically sets the tablet audio volume to 50% when recording audio.
Environment→ ・Device: iPad 10th generation ・OS:**iOS18.3.2 I'm using AVAudioSession to record sound in my application. But I recently came to realize that when the app starts a recording session on a tablet, OS automatically sets the tablet volume to 50% and when after recording ends, it doesn't change back to the previous volume level before starting the recording. So I would like to know whether this is an OS default behavior or a bug? If it's a default behavior, I much appreciate if I can get a link to the documentation.

AVAssetWriterInput Crash on appendSampleBuffer Converting PCM
Overview We are producing audio in real time from an editing application and are trying to put that on an HLS stream. We attempt to submit PCM samples through an audio writer but are getting a crash after a select number of samples have been appended. Depending on the number of audio frames in the PCM buffer, we might get more iterations before the crash but it always has the same traceback (see below). Code The setup is rather simple. We took inspiration from a few sources around the web. NSMutableDictionary *audio = [[NSMutableDictionary alloc] init]; [audio setObject:@(kAudioFormatMPEG4AAC) forKey:AVFormatIDKey]; [audio setObject:[NSNumber numberWithInt:config.audioSampleRate] // 48000 forKey:AVSampleRateKey]; [audio setObject:[NSNumber numberWithInt:config.audioChannels] // 2 forKey:AVNumberOfChannelsKey]; [audio setObject:@160000 forKey:AVEncoderBitRateKey]; m_audioConfig = [[NSDictionary alloc] initWithDictionary:audio]; m_audio = [[AVAssetWriterInput alloc] initWithMediaType:AVMediaTypeAudio outputSettings:m_audioConfig]; AVAudioFrameCount audioFrames = BUFFER_SAMPLES * bCount; AVAudioPCMBuffer *pcmBuffer = [[AVAudioPCMBuffer alloc] initWithPCMFormat:m_full.pcmFormat frameCapacity:audioFrames]; pcmBuffer.frameLength = pcmBuffer.frameCapacity; AudioChannelLayout layout; memset(&layout, 0, sizeof(layout)); layout.mChannelLayoutTag = kAudioChannelLayoutTag_Stereo; CMFormatDescriptionRef format; OSStatus stats = CMAudioFormatDescriptionCreate( kCFAllocatorDefault, pcmBuffer.format.streamDescription, sizeof(layout), &layout, 0, nil, nil, &format ); for (int i = 0; i < bCount; i++) { AudioPCM pcm; audioCallback->callback(pcm); memcpy(*(pcmBuffer.int16ChannelData) + (bufferSize * i), pcm.data, bufferSize); } size_t samplesConsumed = BUFFER_SAMPLES * bCount; CMSampleBufferRef sampleBuffer; CMSampleTimingInfo timing; timing.duration = CMTimeMake(1, config.audioSampleRate); timing.presentationTimeStamp = presentationTime; timing.decodeTimeStamp = kCMTimeInvalid; OSStatus ostatus = CMSampleBufferCreate( kCFAllocatorDefault, nil, false, nil, nil, format, (CMItemCount)pcmBuffer.frameLength, 1, &timing, 0, nil, &sampleBuffer ); //// ostatus = CMSampleBufferSetDataBufferFromAudioBufferList( sampleBuffer, kCFAllocatorDefault, kCFAllocatorDefault, kCMSampleBufferFlag_AudioBufferList_Assure16ByteAlignment, pcmBuffer.audioBufferList ); if (ostatus != noErr) { NSLog(@"fill audio sample from buffer list failed: %s", logAudioError(ostatus)); return; } ostatus = CMSampleBufferSetDataReady(sampleBuffer); if (ostatus != noErr) { NSLog(@"set sample buffer ready failed: %s", logAudioError(ostatus)); return; } // Finally we can attach it, then shove the presentation time forward [m_audio appendSampleBuffer:sampleBuffer]; The Crash The crash points towards some level of deallocation when the conversion tooling is done or has enough samples to process an output packet? It's had to say. 0 caulk 0x1a1e9532c caulk::alloc::tiered_allocator<caulk::alloc::size_range_tier<0ul, 1008ul, caulk::alloc::tree_allocator<caulk::alloc::chunk_allocator<caulk::alloc::page_allocator, caulk::alloc::bitmap_allocator, caulk::alloc::embed_block_memory, 16384ul, 16ul, 6ul>>>, caulk::alloc::size_range_tier<1009ul, 256000ul, caulk::alloc::guarded_edges_allocator<caulk::alloc::consolidating_free_map<caulk::alloc::page_allocator, 10485760ul>, 4ul>>, caulk::alloc::tracking_allocator<caulk::alloc::page_allocator>>::deallocate(caulk::alloc::block, unsigned long) + 636 1 AudioToolboxCore 0x1993fbfe4 ExtendedAudioBufferList_Destroy + 112 2 AudioToolboxCore 0x1993d5fe0 std::__1::__optional_destruct_base<ACCodecOutputBuffer, false>::~__optional_destruct_base[abi:ne180100]() + 68 3 AudioToolboxCore 0x1993d5f48 acv2::CodecConverter::~CodecConverter() + 196 4 AudioToolboxCore 0x1993d5e5c acv2::CodecConverter::~CodecConverter() + 16 5 AudioToolboxCore 0x1992574d8 std::__1::vector<std::__1::unique_ptr<acv2::AudioConverterBase, std::__1::default_delete<acv2::AudioConverterBase>>, std::__1::allocator<std::__1::unique_ptr<acv2::AudioConverterBase, std::__1::default_delete<acv2::AudioConverterBase>>>>::__clear[abi:ne180100]() + 84 6 AudioToolboxCore 0x199259acc acv2::AudioConverterChain::RebuildConverterChain(acv2::ChainBuildSettings const&) + 116 7 AudioToolboxCore 0x1992596ec acv2::AudioConverterChain::SetProperty(unsigned int, unsigned int, void const*) + 1808 8 AudioToolboxCore 0x199324acc acv2::AudioConverterV2::setProperty(unsigned int, unsigned int, void const*) + 84 9 AudioToolboxCore 0x199327f08 with_resolved(OpaqueAudioConverter*, caulk::function_ref<int (AudioConverterAPI*)>) + 60 10 AudioToolboxCore 0x1993281e4 AudioConverterSetProperty + 72 11 MediaToolbox 0x1a7566c2c FigSampleBufferProcessorCreateWithAudioCompression + 2296 12 MediaToolbox 0x1a754db08 0x1a70b5000 + 4819720 13 MediaToolbox 0x1a754dab4 FigMediaProcessorCreateForAudioCompressionWithFormatWriter + 100 14 MediaToolbox 0x1a77ebb98 0x1a70b5000 + 7564184 15 MediaToolbox 0x1a7804158 0x1a70b5000 + 7663960 16 MediaToolbox 0x1a7801da0 0x1a70b5000 + 7654816 17 AVFCore 0x1ada530c4 -[AVFigAssetWriterTrack addSampleBuffer:error:] + 192 18 AVFCore 0x1ada55164 -[AVFigAssetWriterAudioTrack _flushPendingSampleBuffersReturningError:] + 500 19 AVFCore 0x1ada55354 -[AVFigAssetWriterAudioTrack addSampleBuffer:error:] + 472 20 AVFCore 0x1ada4ebf0 -[AVAssetWriterInputWritingHelper appendSampleBuffer:error:] + 128 21 AVFCore 0x1ada4c354 -[AVAssetWriterInput appendSampleBuffer:] + 168 22 lib_devapple_hls.dylib 0x115d2c7cc detail::AppleHLSImplementation::audioRuntime() + 1052 23 lib_devapple_hls.dylib 0x115d2d094 void* std::__1::__thread_proxy[abi:ne180100]<std::__1::tuple<std::__1::unique_ptr<std::__1::__thread_struct, std::__1::default_delete<std::__1::__thread_struct>>, void (detail::AppleHLSImplementation::*)(), detail::AppleHLSImplementation*>>(void*) + 72 24 libsystem_pthread.dylib 0x196e5b2e4 _pthread_start + 136 Any insight would be welcome!

PHPhotoLibrary.shared().performChanges raised error 3303
I want to modify the photo's exif information, which means putting the original image in through CGImageDestinationAddImageFromSource, and then adding the modified exif information to a place called properties. Here is the complete process: static func setImageMetadata(asset: PHAsset, exif: [String: Any]) { let options = PHContentEditingInputRequestOptions() options.canHandleAdjustmentData = { (adjustmentData) -> Bool in return true } asset.requestContentEditingInput(with: options, completionHandler: { input, map in guard let inputNN = input else { return } guard let url = inputNN.fullSizeImageURL else { return } let output = PHContentEditingOutput(contentEditingInput: inputNN) let adjustmentData = PHAdjustmentData(formatIdentifier: AppInfo.appBundleId(), formatVersion: AppInfo.appVersion(), data: Data()) output.adjustmentData = adjustmentData let outputURL = output.renderedContentURL guard let source = CGImageSourceCreateWithURL(url as CFURL, nil) else { return } guard let dest = CGImageDestinationCreateWithURL(outputURL as CFURL, UTType.jpeg.identifier as CFString, 1, nil) else { return } CGImageDestinationAddImageFromSource(dest, source, 0, exif as CFDictionary) let d = CGImageDestinationFinalize(dest) // d is true, and I checked the content of outputURL, image has been write correctly, it could be convert to UIImage and image is ok. PHPhotoLibrary.shared().performChanges { let changeReq = PHAssetChangeRequest(for: asset) changeReq.contentEditingOutput = output } completionHandler: { succ, err in if !succ { print(err) // 3303 here, always! } } }) }

Essentials of macOS to read and write mp3 and mp4 audio files
Hi, On macOS I used to open MP3 and MP4 files with ExtAudioFile. For a few years it doesn't work anymore. So I decided to try different macOS API using the AudioFileID of AudioToolbox framework. I decided to write a test: https://gist.github.com/joelkraehemann/7f5b241b52ca38c3a765c138fb647588 It fails right here: AudioFileOpenWithCallbacks() By telling OSStatus error 1954115647, which means kAudioFileUnsupportedFileTypeError. The filename was set to an MP4 file: ~/Music/test.mp4 Howto fix this? regards, Joël

Clarification of use of `AVAssetDownloadConfiguration` and `AVAssetDownloadTask` to persist MP3 Audio downloads/streams
Hello! I have been following the UsingAVFoundationToPlayAndPersistHTTPLiveStreams sample code in order to test persisting streams to disk. In addition to support for m3u8, I have noticed in testing that this also seems to work for MP3 Audio, simply by changing the plist entries to point to remote URLs with audio/mpeg content. Is this expected, or are there caveats that I should be aware of? Thanks you!

Inconsistent history responses in early morning polls
I use the Apple Music API to poll my listening history at regular intervals. Every morning between 5:30AM and 7:30AM, I observe a strange pattern in the API responses. During this window, one or more of the regular polling intervals returns a response that differs significantly from the prior history response, even though I had no listening activity at that time. I'm using this endpoint: https://api.music.apple.com/v1/me/recent/played/tracks?types=songs,library-songs&include[library-songs]=catalog&include[songs]=albums,artists Here’s a concrete example from this morning: Time: 5:45AM Fetch 1 Tracks (subset): 1799261990, 1739657416, 1786317143, 1784288789, 1743250261, 1738681804, 1789325498, 1743036755, ... Time: 5:50AM Fetch 2 Tracks (subset): 1799261990, 1739657416, 1786317143, 1623924746, 1635185172, 1574004238, 1198763630, 1621299055, ... Time: 5:55AM Fetch 3 Tracks (subset): 1799261990, 1739657416, 1786317143, 1784288789, 1743250261, 1738681804, 1789325498, 1743036755, ... At 5:50, a materially different history is returned, then it returns back to the prior history at the next poll. I've listened to all of the tracks in each set, but the 5:50 history drops some tracks and returns some from further back in history. I've connected other accounts and the behavior is consistent and repeatable every day across them. It appears the API is temporarily returning a different (possibly outdated or cached?) view of the user's history during that early morning window. Has anyone seen this behavior before? Is this a known issue with the Apple Music API or MusicKit backend? I'd love any insights into what might cause this, or recommendations on how to work around it.

AVPlayer periodic time observer stops notifying when switching back from AirPlay to local playback
The app registers a periodic time observer to the AVPlayer when the playback starts and it works fine. When switching to AirPlay during playback, the periodic time observation continues working as expected. However, when switching back to local playback, the periodic time observer does not fire anymore until a seek is performed. The app removes the periodic time observer only when the playback stops. I can see that when switching back to local playback, the timeControlStatus successively changes to .waitingToPlayAtSpecifiedRate (reason: .evaluatingBufferingRate) then to .waitingToPlayAtSpecifiedRate (reason: .toMinimizeStalls) and finally to .playing But the time observation does not work anymore. Also, the issue is systematic with Live and VOD streams providing a program date (with HLS property #EXT-X-PROGRAM-DATE-TIME), with or without any DRM, and is never reproduced with other VOD streams.

Lightning to HDMI mirrors
I am developing a VOD playback app, but when I stream video to an external monitor connected via HDMI with Lightning on iOS 18 or later, the screen goes dark and I cannot confirm playback. The app I am developing does not detect the HDMI and display the Player separately, but simply mirrors the video. We have confirmed that the same phenomenon occurs with other services, but we were able to confirm playback with some services such as Apple TV. Please let us know if there are any other necessary settings such as video certificates required for video playback. We would also like to know if the problem occurs with iOS 18 or later.

How to inform Logic Pro that AU view does not have a fixed aspect ratio?
I have an AUv3 that passes all validation and can be loaded into Logic Pro without issue. The UI for the plug in can be any aspect ratio but Logic insists on presenting it in a view with a fixed aspect ratio. That is when resizing, both the height and width are resized. I have never managed to work out what it is I need to do specify to Logic to allow the user to resize width or height independently of each other. Can anyone tell me what I need to specify in the AU code that will inform Logic that the view can be resized from any side of the window/panel?

iOS Audio Routing - Bluetooth Output + Built-in Microphone Input
Hello! I'm experiencing an issue with iOS's audio routing system when trying to use Bluetooth headphones for audio output while also recording environmental audio from the built-in microphone. Desired behavior: Play audio through Bluetooth headset (AirPods) Record unprocessed environmental audio from the iPhone's built-in microphone Actual behavior: When explicitly selecting the built-in microphone, iOS reports it's using it (in currentRoute.inputs) However, the actual audio data received is clearly still coming from the AirPods microphone The audio is heavily processed with voice isolation/noise cancellation, removing environmental sounds Environment Details Device: iPhone 12 Pro Max iOS Version: 18.4.1 Hardware: AirPods Audio Framework: AVAudioEngine (also tried AudioQueue) Code Attempted I've tried multiple approaches to force the correct routing: func configureAudioSession() { let session = AVAudioSession.sharedInstance() // Configure to allow Bluetooth output but use built-in mic try? session.setCategory(.playAndRecord, options: [.allowBluetoothA2DP, .defaultToSpeaker]) try? session.setActive(true) // Explicitly select built-in microphone if let inputs = session.availableInputs, let builtInMic = inputs.first(where: { $0.portType == .builtInMic }) { try? session.setPreferredInput(builtInMic) print("Selected input: \(builtInMic.portName)") } // Log the current route let route = session.currentRoute print("Current input: \(route.inputs.first?.portName ?? "None")") // Configure audio engine with native format let inputNode = audioEngine.inputNode let nativeFormat = inputNode.inputFormat(forBus: 0) inputNode.installTap(onBus: 0, bufferSize: 1024, format: nativeFormat) { buffer, time in // Process audio buffer // Despite showing "Built-in Microphone" in route, audio appears to be // coming from AirPods with voice isolation applied - welp! } try? audioEngine.start() } I've also tried various combinations of: Different audio session modes (.default, .measurement, .voiceChat) Different option combinations (with/without .allowBluetooth, .allowBluetoothA2DP) Setting session.setPreferredInput() both before and after activation Diagnostic Observations When AirPods are connected: AVAudioSession.currentRoute.inputs correctly shows "Built-in Microphone" after setPreferredInput() The actual audio data received shows clear signs of AirPods' voice isolation processing Background/environmental sounds are actively filtered out... When recording a test audio played near the phone (not through the app), the recording is nearly silent. Only headset voice goes through. Questions Is there a workaround to force iOS to actually use the built-in microphone while maintaining Bluetooth output? Are there any lower-level configurations that might resolve this issue? Any insights, workarounds, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. This is blocking a critical feature in my application that requires environmental audio recording while providing audio feedback through headphones 😅
