10-bit support in iPad Pro
Hi, I’m using the latest iPad Pro (13-inch) and I can see that Metal offers an rgb10a2unorm texture for rendering, but when I render a grey ramp and measure the actual luminance, I get a pattern that I would expect from an 8-bit texture (see below). Before I start ripping apart all my code, is there anything else I need to do to convince iOS to render my texture in 10-bit? I already tried setting the PixelFormat in my CMetalLayer to rgb10a2unorm, but that didn’t change anything.

Game Center breaks "Kids games" Rules on iPadOS 26
I have several games on the app store which are setup as "For Kids" which means these games cannot have any way to access the outside world including the App Store. No problem. These games have worked fine for years until iOS 26. Now, all my updates are being rejected because the new version of Game Center running on iPadOS 26 has a way for people to exit the game and go to the App Store. I have no control over this since it's built into Game Center, and the app review folks want me to put a "parental gate" on it, but there's no way to do that because... well... it's in Game Center, not my code. So, I'm unable to update my apps because of this. Presumably, the existing versions on the app store still do this exact same thing, so my update isn't going to make any difference. Does anyone know of a way to make that crap at the top go away so this isn't an issue?

Utilizing Point Cloud data from `ObjectCaptureSession` in WWDC23
I am currently developing a mobile and server-side application using the new ObjectCaptureSession on iOS and PhotogrammetrySession on MacOS. I have two questions regarding the newly updated APIs. From WWDC23 session: "Meet Object Capture for iOS", I know that the Object Capture API uses Point Cloud data captured from iPhone LiDAR sensor. I want to know how to use the Point Cloud data captured on iPhone ObjectCaptureSession and use it to create 3D models on PhotogrammetrySession on MacOS. From the example code from WWDC21, I know that the PhotogrammetrySession utilizes depth map from captured photo images by embedding it into the HEIC image and use those data to create a 3D asset on PhotogrammetrySession on MacOS. I would like to know if Point Cloud data is also embedded into the image to be used during 3D reconstruction and if not, how else the Point Cloud data is inserted to be used during reconstruction. Another question is, I know that Point Cloud data is returned as a result from request to the PhtogrammetrySession.Request. I would like to know if this PointCloud data is the same set of data captured during ObjectCaptureSession from WWDC23 that is used to create ObjectCapturePointCloudView. Thank you to everyone for the help in advance. It's a real pleasure to be developing with all the updates to RealityKit and the Object Capture API.

Background GPU Access availability
I would love to use Background GPU Access to do some video processing in the background. However the documentation of BGContinuedProcessingTaskRequest.Resources.gpu clearly states: Not all devices support background GPU use. For more information, see Performing long-running tasks on iOS and iPadOS. Is there a list available of currently released devices that do (or don't) support GPU background usage? That would help to understand what part of our user base can use this feature. (And what hardware we need to test this on as developers.) For example it seems that it isn't supported on an iPad Pro M1 with the current iOS 26 beta. The simulators also seem to not support the background GPU resource. So would be great to understand what hardware is capable of using this feature!

Metal 4: Proper usage of requestResidency() with unique per-frame textures at 120fps
Hello, I have some confusion regarding ResidencySet. Specifically, about the requestResidency() function: how often should we call it? I have a captureOutput(_:didOutput:from:) method that is triggered at 60 or 120 fps. Inside this method, I am calling the following code every frame: computeResidencySet.removeAllAllocations() сomputeResidencySet.addAllocation(TextureA) computeResidencySet.addAllocation(TextureB) computeResidencySet.addAllocation(TextureC) computeResidencySet.commit() computeResidencySet.requestResidency() // Should we call it every frame? Please keep in mind that TextureA, TextureB, and TextureC are unique for each call (new instances are provided on every frame)."

ModelEntity(named:in:) fails to load USD file from RealityKitContent bundle with misleading error?
My experience has been that ModelEntity(named:in:) can be used to load a USD file with a simple structure consisting of entities and model entities, and, critically, it will flatten the entity hierarchy down to a single ModelEntity, presumably reducing the number of draw calls. However, can anyone verify that the following is true? If ModelEntity(named:in:) is used to load a USD file from a RealityKit content bundle, it may fail when the USD file contains more complex data, such as shader graph material definitions, or perhaps for some other reason. I am not sure. AND the error that ModelEntity(named:in:) throws in this case is Cannot load RealityKitContent entity: Failed to find resource with name "<name>" in bundle which would literally suggest that the file does not exist, instead of what I assume the error actually is, which is "the file exists but its entity hierarchy could not be flattened to a single ModelEntity" ? Is that an accurate description of the known behavior of ModelEntity:named:in:)? I understand that I could use Entity(named:in:) instead, without the flattening feature. My question is really more about the seemingly misleading error message. Thank you for any clarification you can provide.

How to load a USDZ inside of a Reality Composer Pro package as ModelEntity in RealityKit ?
I need a MeshResource from ModelEntity to generate a box collider, but ModelEntity fails to load USDZ files from the Reality Composer Pro (RCP) bundle. This code works for loading an Entity: // Successfully loads as generic Entity previewEntity = try await Entity(named: fileName, in: realityKitContentBundle) But this fails when trying to load as ModelEntity: // Fails to load as ModelEntity modelEntity = try await ModelEntity(named: fileName, in: realityKitContentBundle) I found this thread mentioning: "You'll likely go from USDZ to Entity which contains a MeshResource when you load/init the USDZ file." But it doesn't explain how to actually extract the MeshResource. Could anyone advise: How to properly load USDZ files as ModelEntity from RCP bundles? How to extract MeshResource from a successfully loaded Entity? Alternative approaches to generate box colliders if direct extraction isn't possible? Sample code for extraction or workarounds would be greatly appreciated!

Can you delete a MTLLibrary once shaders are placed into pipeline?
Hello, I am quite new to using the metal API and was wondering if it was common (or even possible) if you knew that, when a pipeline was created, you never needed to make another one with the same shaders again, if it is safe to release the library the was used to reference the shaders? Only asking because this is possible in other apis, but apple never mentions (as far as I have found) if this is safe or not safe to do.

MetalFX upscaler/denoiser and instant changes
Hi, What's the best way to handle drastic changes in scene charateristics with the new MTLFXTemporalDenoisedScaler? Let's say a visible object of the scene radically changes its material properties. I can modify the albedo and roughness textures consequently. But I suspect the history will be corrupted. Blending visual information between the new frame and the previous ones might be a nonsense. I guess the problem should be the same when objects appear or disappear instantly. Is the upsacler manage these events for us (by lowering blending), or should we use the reactive or the denoise strength mask or something like that to handle them?

RealityKit generates an excessive amount of logging
During regular use, RealityKit generates an excessive amount of internal logging that is not actionable by third party developers. When developing an iOS RealityKit/ARKit app, this makes the Xcode console challenging to use for regular work. (FB19173812) See screenshots below. Xcode does have an option for filtering out logging from specific SDKs, but enabling this feature to suppress the logging of RealityKit and related SDKs like PHASE is something developers have to do dozens of times each day. After a year of developing a RealityKit app, this process becomes frustrating. If SDKs like Foundation, UIKit, and SwiftUI generated as much logging as RealityKit and related SDKs, Xcode's console would be unusable. Is there any way to disable the logging of RealityKit and PHASE permanently? Thank you for any help you provide.

scenekit is deprecated but realitykit is for special computing what should i use ?
hello i am new to apple ecosystem and development i have some coding experience with c# now i like to develop my game for iphone 16 and up(due to ability to run ai models) but i am having hard time figuring out what to use there is a lot of resources for scene-kit but on its doc page it says its deprecated so i look at the reality-kit docs and tutorials and its strictly tells how to develop for visionos and i am really confused about this since there is no tutorials that shows how to develop a game for ios with reality-kit that does not focus visionos. i just want to develop for iphone 16 and up but i cant find resources focuses at that.

Metal IR reference
Hello! I'm developing a GPU (shader) language, where I aim to target multiple backends with a common frontend. I wanted to avoid having to round trip through Metal, and go straight to IR just like I have with SPIRV, in order to have a fast and efficient compilation process. I've been looking for a reference page where I can read about Metals IR, and as far as I'm aware, it exists, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. Furthermore, if such a reference is available, is there also a toolkit where I can run validation on the output IR, and perhaps even run optimizations, much like spv-tools for SPIRV? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks, Gustav

RealityKit VideoMaterial renders pink on iOS 18
our app is live, and it appears that since the ios 18 update - the VideoMaterial renders pink / purple color instead of the video (picture attached). the audio is rendered properly. we found that it occurs on old devices: iPhone 11 & iPhone SE 2020. I've found this thread of Andy Jazz on stackoverflow: Steps to Reproduce: Create a plane for the video screen. Apply a VideoMaterial using AVPlayerItem. Anchor the model entity to an ARImageAnchor. Expected Outcome: The video should play as a material on the plane in RealityKit. Actual Outcome: On iOS 18, the plane appears pink, indicating the VideoMaterial isn’t applied. What I’ve Tried: -Verified the video URL is correct. -Checked that the AVPlayerItem and VideoMaterial are initialised correctly. -Ensured the AVPlayer is playing the video. I also tried different formats (mov / mp4 / m4v), and verifying that the video's status is readyToPlay. any suggestions?

Embedded links not clickable in PDFs for iOS devices
I have a SPFx React application where I am printing the HTML page content using the javascript default window.print() functionality. Once I save the page as pdf from the print preview window and open it using Adobe Acrobat, the links(for eg -> Google) within the content are not clickable and appearing as plain text. I have tried to print random pages post searching with any keywords in Google and saved the files as pdfs, but, unfortunately, the links are still not clickable there as well. To check whether it is an Adobe Acrobat issue, I have performed the same print functionality from Android devices and shared the pdf file across the iOS devices and in that case, when opened using Adobe Acrobat, the links are appearing to be clickable. I am wondering whether it is something related to how the default print functionality works for iPadOS and iOS devices. Any insights on this would be really helpful. Thanks!!! Note: The links are clickable for MacOS as well as for Windows. #ios #ipados #javascript #spfx #react

ShaderGraphMaterial.getParameter(handle:) always return nil, is this expected behavior?
I've loaded a ShaderGraphMaterial from a RealityKit content bundle and I'm attempting to access the initial values of its parameters using getParameter(handle:), but this method appears to always return nil: let shaderGraphMaterial = try await ShaderGraphMaterial(named: "MyMaterial", from: "MyFile") let namedParameterValue = shaderGraphMaterial.getParameter(name: "myParameter") // This prints the value of the `myParameter` parameter, as expected. print("namedParameterValue = \(namedParameterValue)") let handle = ShaderGraphMaterial.parameterHandle(name: "myParameter") let handleParameterValue = shaderGraphMaterial.getParameter(handle: handle) // Expected behavior: prints the value of the `myParameter` parameter, as above. // Observed behavior: prints `nil`. print("handleParameterValue = \(handleParameterValue)") Is this expected behavior? Based on the documentation at https://developer.apple.com/documentation/realitykit/shadergraphmaterial/getparameter(handle:) I'd expect getParameter(handle:) to return the value of the parameter, just as getParameter(name:) does. I've tested this on iOS 18.5 and iOS 26.0 beta 2. Assuming this getParameter(handle:) works as designed, is the following ShaderGraphMaterial extension an appropriate workaround, or can you recommend a better approach? Thank you. public extension ShaderGraphMaterial { /// Reassigns the values of all named material parameters using the handle-based API. /// /// This works around an issue where, at least as of RealityKit 26.0 beta 2 and /// earlier, `getParameter(handle:)` will always return `nil` when used to read the /// initial value of a shader graph material parameter read using /// `ShaderGraphMaterial(named:from:in:)`, whereas `getParameter(name:)` will work /// as expected. private mutating func copyNamedParametersToHandles() { for parameterName in self.parameterNames { if let value = self.getParameter(name: parameterName) { let handle = ShaderGraphMaterial.parameterHandle(name: parameterName) do { try self.setParameter(handle: handle, value: value) } catch { assertionFailure("Cannot set parameter value") } } } } }

Low Power Mode on MacOS 26 Tahoe + Vsync fullscreen limits application to 30 fps
I'm experiencing a specific issue where when using any of the MacOS 26 Tahoe betas with Low Power Mode enabled and using Vsync in fullscreen, my application framerate gets limited to a hard 30 fps. I have not experienced this on any older OS. For example Low Power Mode on 13.6 Ventura with Vsync fullscreen lets my application run at full 60 fps without issues. Is this a bug or a change in behavior of Low Power Mode on Tahoe? My application is 3D, runs at 60 fps and is sensitive to tearing, so I need Vsync and it is mostly utilized in fullscreen. And Low Power Mode is a default for many Macs, so default experience on Tahoe currently is a halved 30 fps. However there also seems to be inconsistencies of on which machines this happens, but older OSes are always fine.

Game Center SignIn alert appears on macOS 26 (Tahoe) without capability or entitlement
Hello, On macOS 26 (Tahoe), when building a OSX app that includes GameKit code, calling GKLocalPlayer.local.authenticateHandler shows the "Sign In to Game Center" alert (e.g. didShowFullscreenSignIn) — even if the app does not have the Game Center capability enabled or any related entitlement (com.apple.developer.game-center). This alert only appears when the user is not signed in to Game Center in system settings. However, when testing the same code path on iOS app built with macOS 26 (Tahoe), the alert does not appear unless the proper capability and entitlement are included. This behavior is different from macOS 15 (Sequoia) + Xcode 15.x. Prior to the update, Game Center features did not work at all even with the OSX app without Capability and Entitlements. Steps to Reproduce Create a new OSX app target (App Sandbox enabled, no Game Center capability). Add minimal GameKit code: GKLocalPlayer.local.authenticateHandler = { _, _, _ in } Build OSX app and run on macOS 26 (Tahoe). Ensure Game Center is signed out in System Settings. Observe: “Sign In to Game Center” alert appears automatically. Expected Behavior When Game Center capability and entitlement are not present, authenticateHandler should fail silently, and no signIn alert should appear. Actual Behavior On OSX app, the Game Center signIn UI appears even without any Game Center capability or entitlement. On iOS app, this alert does not appear. *Build Configuration: built with the same condition. (macOS 26 + Xcode 26) Question Could you please confirm whether this behavior is an intentional change in macOS 26 or a bug only for OSX apps in the GameKit authentication flow? Thank you.

I've loaded a ShaderGraphMaterial from a RealityKit content bundle and I'm attempting to access the initial values of its parameters using getParameter(handle:), but this method appears to always return nil: let shaderGraphMaterial = try await ShaderGraphMaterial(named: "MyMaterial", from: "MyFile") let namedParameterValue = shaderGraphMaterial.getParameter(name: "myParameter") // This prints the value of the `myParameter` parameter, as expected. print("namedParameterValue = \(namedParameterValue)") let handle = ShaderGraphMaterial.parameterHandle(name: "myParameter") let handleParameterValue = shaderGraphMaterial.getParameter(handle: handle) // Expected behavior: prints the value of the `myParameter` parameter, as above. // Observed behavior: prints `nil`. print("handleParameterValue = \(handleParameterValue)") Is this expected behavior? Based on the documentation at https://developer.apple.com/documentation/realitykit/shadergraphmaterial/getparameter(handle:) I'd expect getParameter(handle:) to return the value of the parameter, just as getParameter(name:) does. I've tested this on iOS 18.5 and iOS 26.0 beta 2. Assuming this getParameter(handle:) works as designed, is the following ShaderGraphMaterial extension an appropriate workaround, or can you recommend a better approach? Thank you. public extension ShaderGraphMaterial { /// Reassigns the values of all named material parameters using the handle-based API. /// /// This works around an issue where, at least as of RealityKit 26.0 beta 2 and /// earlier, `getParameter(handle:)` will always return `nil` when used to read the /// initial value of a shader graph material parameter read using /// `ShaderGraphMaterial(named:from:in:)`, whereas `getParameter(name:)` will work /// as expected. private mutating func copyNamedParametersToHandles() { for parameterName in self.parameterNames { if let value = self.getParameter(name: parameterName) { let handle = ShaderGraphMaterial.parameterHandle(name: parameterName) do { try self.setParameter(handle: handle, value: value) } catch { assertionFailure("Cannot set parameter value") } } } } }

Thank you.
