Mistral/LLaMa Core ML Conversion
Hi, I am new to developing on Apple’s platform yet I want to familiarize myself with Core ML and Core ML Tools. I was watching the WWDC24: Bring your machine learning and AI models to Apple Silicon video and was trying to follow along. After multiple attempts and much reading up on documentation, I am still unable to get a coherent script running that will convert the Mistral model that the host used and convert it to a valid Core ML model. here is a pastebin to what i have currently: https://pastebin.com/04cVjF1v if you require the output as well please let me know

ANE Error with Statefu Model: "Unable to compute prediction" when State Tensor width is not 32-aligned
Hi everyone, I believe I’ve encountered a potential bug or a hardware alignment limitation in the Core ML Framework / ANE Runtime specifically affecting the new Stateful API (introduced in iOS 18/macOS 15). The Issue: A Stateful mlprogram fails to run on the Apple Neural Engine (ANE) if the state tensor dimensions (specifically the width) are not a multiple of 32. The model works perfectly on CPU and GPU, but fails on ANE both during runtime and when generating a Performance Report in Xcode. Error Message in Xcode UI: "There was an error creating the performance report Unable to compute the prediction using ML Program. It can be an invalid input data or broken/unsupported model." Observations: Case A (Fails): State shape = (1, 3, 480, 270). Prediction fails on ANE. Case B (Success): State shape = (1, 3, 480, 256). Prediction succeeds on ANE. This suggests an internal memory alignment or tiling issue within the ANE driver when handling Stateful buffers that don't meet the 32-pixel/element alignment. Reproduction Code (PyTorch + coremltools): import torch.nn as nn import coremltools as ct import numpy as np class RNN_Stateful(nn.Module): def __init__(self, hidden_shape): super(RNN_Stateful, self).__init__() # Simple conv to update state self.conv1 = nn.Conv2d(3 + hidden_shape[1], hidden_shape[1], kernel_size=3, padding=1) self.conv2 = nn.Conv2d(hidden_shape[1], 3, kernel_size=3, padding=1) self.register_buffer("hidden_state", torch.ones(hidden_shape, dtype=torch.float16)) def forward(self, imgs): self.hidden_state = self.conv1(torch.cat((imgs, self.hidden_state), dim=1)) return self.conv2(self.hidden_state) # h=480, w=255 causes ANE failure. w=256 works. b, ch, h, w = 1, 3, 480, 255 model = RNN_Stateful((b, ch, h, w)).eval() traced_model = torch.jit.trace(model, torch.randn(b, 3, h, w)) mlmodel = ct.convert( traced_model, inputs=[ct.TensorType(name="input_image", shape=(b, 3, h, w), dtype=np.float16)], outputs=[ct.TensorType(name="output", dtype=np.float16)], states=[ct.StateType(wrapped_type=ct.TensorType(shape=(b, ch, h, w), dtype=np.float16), name="hidden_state")], minimum_deployment_target=ct.target.iOS18, convert_to="mlprogram" ) mlmodel.save("rnn_stateful.mlpackage") Steps to see the error: Open the generated .mlpackage in Xcode 16.0+. Go to the Performance tab and run a test on a device with ANE (e.g., iPhone 15/16 or M-series Mac). The report will fail to generate with the error mentioned above. Environment: OS: macOS 15.2 Xcode: 16.3 Hardware: M4 Has anyone else encountered this 32-pixel alignment requirement for StateType tensors on ANE? Is this a known hardware constraint or a bug in the Core ML runtime? Any insights or workarounds (other than manual padding) would be appreciated.

Updated DetectHandPoseRequest revision from WWDC25 doesn't exist
I watched this year WWDC25 "Read Documents using the Vision framework". At the end of video there is mention of new DetectHandPoseRequest model for hand pose detection in Vision API. I looked Apple documentation and I don't see new revision. Moreover probably typo in video because there is only DetectHumanPoseRequst (swift based) and VNDetectHumanHandPoseRequest (obj-c based) (notice lack of Human prefix in WWDC video) First one have revision only added in iOS 18+: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/vision/detecthumanhandposerequest/revision-swift.enum/revision1 Second one have revision only added in iOS14+: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/vision/vndetecthumanhandposerequestrevision1 I don't see any new revision targeting iOS26+

Downloading my fine tuned model from huggingface
I have used mlx_lm.lora to fine tune a mistral-7b-v0.3-4bit model with my data. I fused the mistral model with my adapters and upload the fused model to my directory on huggingface. I was able to use mlx_lm.generate to use the fused model in Terminal. However, I don't know how to load the model in Swift. I've used Imports import SwiftUI import MLX import MLXLMCommon import MLXLLM let modelFactory = LLMModelFactory.shared let configuration = ModelConfiguration( id: "pharmpk/pk-mistral-7b-v0.3-4bit" ) // Load the model off the main actor, then assign on the main actor let loaded = try await modelFactory.loadContainer(configuration: configuration) { progress in print("Downloading progress: \(progress.fractionCompleted * 100)%") } await MainActor.run { self.model = loaded } I'm getting an error runModel error: downloadError("A server with the specified hostname could not be found.") Any suggestions? Thanks, David PS, I can load the model from the app bundle // directory: Bundle.main.resourceURL! but it's too big to upload for Testflight

CoreML multifunction model runtime memory cost
Recently, I'm trying to deploy some third-party LLM to Apple devices. The methodoloy is similar to https://github.com/Anemll/Anemll. The biggest issue I'm having now is the runtime memory usage. When there are multiple functions in a model (mlpackage or mlmodelc), the runtime memory usage for weights is somehow duplicated when I load all of them. Here's the detail: I created my multifunction mlpackage following https://apple.github.io/coremltools/docs-guides/source/multifunction-models.html I loaded each of the functions using the generated swift class: let config = MLModelConfiguration() config.computeUnits = MLComputeUnits.cpuAndNeuralEngine config.functionName = "infer_512"; let ffn1_infer_512 = try! mimo_FFN_PF_lut4_chunk_01of02(configuration: config) config.functionName = "infer_1024"; let ffn1_infer_1024 = try! mimo_FFN_PF_lut4_chunk_01of02(configuration: config) config.functionName = "infer_2048"; let ffn1_infer_2048 = try! mimo_FFN_PF_lut4_chunk_01of02(configuration: config) I observed that RAM usage increases linearly as I load each of the functions. Using instruments, I see that there are multiple HWX files generated and loaded, each of which contains all the weight data. My understanding of what's happening here: The CoreML framework did some MIL->MIL preprocessing before further compilation, which includes separating CPU workload from ANE workload. The ANE part of each function is moved into a separate MIL file then compile separately into a HWX file each. The problem is that the weight data of these HWX files are duplicated. Since that the weight data of LLMs is huge, it will cause out-of-memory issue on mobile devices. The improvement I'm hoping from Apple: I hope we can try to merge the processed MIL files back into one before calling ANECCompile(), so that the weights can be merged. I don't have control over that in user space and I'm not sure if that is feasible. So I'm asking for help here. Thanks.

no tensorflow-metal past tf 2.18?
Hi We're on tensorflow 2.20 that has support now for python 3.13 (finally!). tensorflow-metal is still only supporting 2.18 which is over a year old. When can we expect to see support in tensorflow-metal for tf 2.20 (or later!) ? If it's taking so long to release it, why not open source it so the community can keep it more up to date? cheers Matt

MPS SDPA Attention Kernel Regression on A14-class (M1) in macOS 26.3.1 — Works on A15+ (M2+)
Summary Since macOS 26, our Core ML / MPS inference pipeline produces incorrect results on Mac mini M1 (Macmini9,1, A14-class SoC). The same model and code runs correctly on M2 and newer (A15-class and up). The regression appears to be in the Scaled Dot-Product Attention (SDPA) kernel path in the MPS backend. Environment Affected Mac mini M1 — Macmini9,1 (A14-class) Not affected M2 and newer (A15-class and up) Last known good macOS Sequoia First broken macOS 26 (Tahoe) ? Confirmed broken on macOS 26.3.1 Framework Core ML + MPS backend Language C++ (via CoreML C++ API) Description We ship an audio processing application (VoiceAssist by NoiseWorks) that runs a deep learning model (based on Demucs architecture) via Core ML with the MPS compute unit. On macOS Sequoia this works correctly on all Apple Silicon Macs including M1. After updating to macOS 26 (Tahoe), inference on M1 Macs fails — either producing garbage output or crashing. The same binary, same .mlpackage, same inputs work correctly on M2+. Our Apple contact has suggested the root cause is a regression in the A14-specific MPS SDPA attention kernel, which may have broken when the Metal/MPS stack was updated in macOS 26. The model makes heavy use of attention layers, and the failure correlates precisely with the SDPA path being exercised on A14 hardware. Steps to Reproduce Load a Core ML model that uses Scaled Dot-Product Attention (e.g. a transformer or attention-based audio model) Run inference with MLComputeUnits::cpuAndGPU (MPS active) Run on Mac mini M1 (Macmini9,1) with macOS 26.3.1 Compare output to the same model running on M2 / macOS Sequoia Expected: Correct inference output, consistent with M2+ and macOS Sequoia behavior Actual: Incorrect / corrupted output (or crash), only on A14-class hardware running macOS 26+ Workaround Forcing MLComputeUnits::cpuOnly bypasses MPS entirely and produces correct output on M1, confirming the issue is in the MPS compute path. This is not acceptable as a shipping workaround due to performance impact. Additional Notes The failure is hardware-specific (A14 only) and OS-specific (macOS 26+), pointing to a kernel-level regression rather than a model or app bug We first became aware of this through a customer report Happy to provide a symbolicated crash log if helpful this text was summarized by AI and human verified

Is it possible to create a virtual NPU device on macOS using Hypervisor.framework + CoreML?
Is it possible to expose a custom VirtIO device to a Linux guest running inside a VM — likely using QEMU backed by Hypervisor.framework. The guest would see this device as something like /dev/npu0, and it would use a kernel driver + userspace library to submit inference requests. On the macOS host, these requests would be executed using CoreML, MPSGraph, or BNNS. The results would be passed back to the guest via IPC. Does the macOS allow this kind of "fake" NPU / GPU

Is MCP (Model Context Protocol) supported on iOS/macOS?
Hi team, I’m exploring the Model Context Protocol (MCP), which is used to connect LLMs/AI agents to external tools in a structured way. It's becoming a common standard for automation and agent workflows. Before I go deeper, I want to confirm: Does Apple currently provide any official MCP server, API surface, or SDK on iOS/macOS? From what I see, only third-party MCP servers exist for iOS simulators/devices, and Apple’s own frameworks (Foundation Models, Apple Intelligence) don’t expose MCP endpoints. Is there any chance Apple might introduce MCP support—or publish recommended patterns for safely integrating MCP inside apps or developer tools? I would like to see if I can share my app's data to the MCP server to enable other third-party apps/services to integrate easily

Defining instructions employing Content Tagging Model
Hello It seems the model Content Tagging doesn't obey when I define the type of tag I wish in the instructions parameters, always the output are the main topics. The unique form to get other type of tags like emotions is using Generable + Guided types. The documentation says it is recommended but not mandatory the use instructions. Maybe I'm setting wrongly the instructions but take a look in the attached snapshot. I copied the definition of tagging emotions from the official documentation. The upper example is employing generable and it works but in the example at the botton I set like instruction the same description of emotion and it doesn't work. I tried with other statements with more or less verbose and never output emotions. Could you provide a state using instruction where it works? Current version of model isn't working with instruction?

FoundationModels Content Sanitizer Blocking Legitimate Text Processing
I'm developing a macOS application using the FoundationModels framework (LanguageModelSession) and encountering issues with the content sanitizer blocking legitimate text input. ** Issue Description:** The content sanitizer is flagging text strings that contain certain substrings, even when they represent legitimate technical content. For example: F_SEEL_SEX1S.wav (sE Electronics SEX1S microphone model) Technical product identifiers Serial numbers and version codes ** Broader Concern:** The content sanitizer appears to be applying restrictions that seem inappropriate for user-owned content. Even if a filename were something like "human sex.wav", users should have the right to process their own legitimate files on their own devices without content filtering interference. ** Error Messages:** SensitiveContentSettings: Sanitizer model found unsafe content in value FoundationModels.LanguageModelSession.GenerationError error 2 ** Questions:** Is there a way to disable content sanitization for processing user-owned content? 2. What's the recommended approach for applications that need to handle arbitrary user text? 3. Are there APIs to process personal content without filtering restrictions? ** Environment:** macOS 26.0 FoundationModels framework LanguageModelSession Any guidance would be appreciated.

How can I give my documents access to Model Foundation
I would like to write a macOS application that uses on-device AI (FoundationModels). I don’t understand how to, practically, give it access to my documents, photos, or contacts and be able to ask it a question like: “Find the document that talks about this topic.” Do I need to manually retrieve the data and provide it in the form of a prompt? Or is FoundationModels capable of accessing it on its own? Thanks

Apple on-device AI models
Hello, I am studying macOS26 Apple Intelligence features. I have created a basic swift program with Xcode. This program is sending prompts to FoundationModels.LanguageModelSession. It works fine but this model is not trained for programming or code completion. Xcode has an AI code completion feature. It is called "Predictive Code completion model". So, there are multiple on-device models on macOS26 ? Are there others ? Is there a way for me to send prompts to this "Predictive Code completion model" from my program ? Thanks

Computer Vision and Foundation Models
Is foundation models matured enough to take input from the Apple Vision framework to generate responses? Something similar to what google's gemini does although in a much smaller scale and for a very specific niche.

Thanks
