About the built-in instrument sound of Apple devices
Does anyone know how to pronounce the sound of a specific instrument when you tap a button on the screen on your iPhone or iPad? Now, in the middle of creating a music learning app, I'm thinking of assigning monotones or chords to the button-like frames on the keyboard and fingerboard on the screen. Can it be achieved with SwiftUI chords alone? Once upon a time, MIDI level 1 I remember that there was a pronunciation function of the instrument, but I don't think about implementing the same function in the current OS. Please lend me your wisdom.

MusicKit - Not showing as a capability in Xcode
A bit of a novice to app development here but I have a paid developer account, I have registered the identifier for MusicKit on the developer website (using the bundle identifier I've selected in Xcode) but the option to add MusicKit as a capability is not available in Xcode? I've manually updated the certificates, closed the app and reopened it, started a new project and tried with a different demo project? Apologies if I am missing something obvious but could someone help me get this capability added?

Process to request the restricted entitlement behind “DJ with Apple Music” (tempo control / time-stretch on Apple Music streams)?
Hi, I’m an iOS developer building an app with an use case that needs advanced playback on Apple Music subscription streams, specifically: • Real-time tempo change (BPM) during playback — i.e., time-stretch with key-lock, not just crossfade. • Beat-matched transitions between tracks. From what I can tell, this capability seems to exist only for approved partners and isn’t available through public MusicKit. Question: What’s the official request path to be evaluated for that restricted partner entitlement (application form, questionnaire, NDA, or internal team/BD contact)? If the entitlement identifier is internal, how can I get my account routed to the right Apple Music team? For reference, publicly announced partners include Algoriddim djay, Serato DJ Pro, rekordbox (AlphaTheta), and Engine DJ—all of which appear to implement mixing features that imply advanced playback (tempo/beat-matching) on Apple Music content. MIDI output form Standalone MIDI Processor Demo App to DAW
I am trying to get MIDI output from the AU Host demo app using the recent MIDI processor example. The processor works correctly in Logic Pro, but I cannot send MIDI from the AUv3 extension in standalone mode using the default host app to another program (e.g., Ableton). The MIDI manager, which is part of the standalone host app, works fine, and I can send MIDI using it directly—Ableton receives it without issues. I have already set the midiOutputNames in the extension, and the midiOutBlock is mapped. However, the MIDI data from the AUv3 extension does not reach Ableton in standalone mode. I suspect the issue is that midiOutBlock might never be called in the plugin, or perhaps an input to the plugin is missing, which prevents it from sending MIDI. I am currently using the default routing. I have modified the MIDI manager such that it works well as described above. Unexpected Ambisonics format
When trying to load an ambisonics file using this project: https://github.com/robertncoomber/NativeiOSAmbisonicPlayback/ I get "Unexpected Ambisonics format". Core Audio Tap: per-device attenuation vs. number of stereo output pairs — how to get unattenuated “raw” app streams?
Hi all, I’ve implemented the new Core Audio Tap API (AudioHardwareCreateProcessTap with CATapDescription) and I’m seeing consistent level attenuation that scales with the number of stereo output pairs exposed by the target device. What I observe Device with 4 stereo pairs (8 outs) → tap shows −12.04 dB relative to source. True 2-ch devices (built-in speakers, AirPods) → ~0 dB attenuation. The attenuation appears regardless of whether I: Create a global (default-output) tap via initStereoGlobalTapButExcludeProcesses: Or create a per-process/per-device tap via initWithProcesses:andDeviceUID:withStream: Additionally, the routing choice inside the sending app matters: App output to “System/Default Output” → I often see no attenuation. App output directly to a multi-out interface (e.g., RME Fireface) → I see the pair-count-scaled attenuation. I can query Core Audio for the number of output channels/pairs and gain-compensate (+20·log10(N_pairs) dB) and that matches my measurements for many cases. However, this compensation is not universally correct because it seems to depend on where each process routes its audio (Default Output vs. direct device), even when those processes are included in the same tap aggregate. Question Is there a supported way to obtain the raw, unattenuated streams for all processes through the Tap API—i.e., to bypass this automatic headroom/attenuation behavior entirely? If this attenuation is expected by design: Is there a documented rule for when it applies (global vs. device taps, per-process taps, stream selection, etc.)? Is there a property/flag to disable it, or a reliable, official method to compute the exact compensation (beyond counting stereo pairs)? Any guidance on ensuring consistent levels when multiple processes route differently (Default Output vs. direct device) but are captured by the same tap? Environment API: AudioHardwareCreateProcessTap + CATapDescription Devices: built-in output (2-ch), RME Fireface (8+ outs / 4+ stereo pairs) Behavior reproducible with both global and per-process/per-device tap descriptions. Accessory not supported by this device
Hi, I've had a new deck installed in my car for about 1.5 weeks. I'm having compatibility issues with my 15PM. It happens both wired and wirelessly, I get the error "Accessory not supported by this device". It used to happen all the time, now it's 50/50. Sometimes it works. I've removed and added Bluetooth multiple times on phone and deck, I bought a belkin usb-c to usb-a cable today and it seems to fix it but the problem comes back. I've changed the setting "FaceID and passcode-allow access when locked-accessories." The car stereo guy reckons it's definitely an issue with the phone not the deck, I'm inclined to believe him since the error states "by this device". Any advice appreciated.

AVPlayerItem. externalMetadata not available
According to the documentation (https://developer.apple.com/documentation/avfoundation/avplayeritem/externalmetadata), AVPlayerItem should have an externalMetadata property. However it does not appear to be visible to my app. When I try, I get: Value of type 'AVPlayerItem' has no member 'externalMetadata' Documentation states iOS 12.2+; I am building with a minimum deployment target of iOS 18. AVAssetResourceLoaderDelegate for radio stream
Hi everyone, I’m trying to use AVAssetResourceLoaderDelegate to handle a live radio stream (e.g. Icecast/HTTP stream). My goal is to have access to the last 30 seconds of audio data during playback, so I can analyze it for specific audio patterns in near-real-time. I’ve implemented a custom resource loader that works fine for podcasts and static files, where the file size and content length are known. However, for infinite live streams, my current implementation stops receiving new loading requests after the first one is served. As a result, the playback either stalls or fails to continue. Has anyone successfully used AVAssetResourceLoaderDelegate with a continuous radio stream? Or maybe you can suggest betterapproach for buffering and analyzing live audio? Any tips, examples, or advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Play Audio and Recognize Speech in Car
Hello, I'm trying to determine the best/recommended AVAudioSession configuration (i.e category, mode, and options) for the following use-case. Essentially, I'd like to switch between periods of playing an audio file and then recognizing speech. The audio file is typically speech and I don't intend for playback and speech recognition to occur simultaneously. I'd like for the user to sill be able to interact with Siri and I'd like for it to work with CarPlay where navigation prompts can occur. I would assume the category to use is 'playAndRecord', but I'm not sure if it's better to just set that once for the entire lifecycle, or set to 'playback' for audio file playback and then switch to 'playAndRecord' for speech recognition . I'm also not sure on the best 'mode' and 'options' to set. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Can a Location-Based Audio AR Experience Run in the Background on iOS?
Hi everyone! I’ve developed a location-based Audio AR app in Unity with FMOD & Resonance Audio and AirPods Pro Head-Tracking to create a ubiquitous augmented soundscape experience. Think of it as an audio version of Pokémon Go, but with a more precise location requirement to ensure spatial audio is placed correctly. I want this experience to run in the background on iOS, but from what I’ve gathered, it seems Unity doesn’t support this well. So, I’m considering developing a Swift version instead. Since this is primarily for research purposes, privacy concerns are not a major issue in my case. However, I’ve come across some potential challenges: Real-time precise location updates – Can iOS provide fully instantaneous, high-accuracy location updates in the background? Continuous real-time data processing – Can an app continuously process spatial audio, head-tracking, and location data while running in the background? I’m not sure if newer iOS versions have improved in these areas or if there are workarounds to achieve this. Would this kind of experience be feasible to run in the background on iOS? Any insights or pointers would be greatly appreciated! I’m very new to iOS development, so apologies if this is a basic question. Thanks in advance!

ioreg AVBControllerState - AVB/EAV Mode
Hello. To determine wether "AVB/EAV Mode" of a AV-capable network interfaces is turned on or off I query the IO registry and evaluate the property "AVBControllerState". I was wondering if this is the "correct" approach and if there is anything known about the values for this property? Network interfaces without AV capability may also carry this property (e.g.: for my WiFi adapter the value of 1) whereas the value for interfaces with AV capability can be 0 and 3. At least as far as I could observe with my limited amount of test devices at hand. Is it safe to assume that a value of 3 means this feature is turned on, 0 that it is turned off and ignore values of 1? Is there another approach to get to know the status of the "AVB/EAV Mode"? Destroy MIDIUMPMutableEndpoint again?
Is there a way to destroy MIDIUMPMutableEndpoint again? In my app, the user has a setting to enable and disable MIDI 2.0. If MIDI 2.0 should not be supported (or if iOS version < 18), it creates a virtual destination and a virtual source. And if MIDI 2.0 should be enabled, it instead creates a MIDIUMPMutableEndpoint, which itself creates the virtual destination and source automatically. So here is my problem: I didn't find any way to destroy the MIDIUMPMutableEndpoint again. There is a method to disable it (setEnabled:NO), but that doesn't destroy or hide the virtual destination and source. So when the user turns MIDI 2.0 support off, I will have two virtual destinations and sources, and cannot get rid of the 2.0 ones. What is the correct way to get rid of the MIDIUMPMutableEndpoint once it is created?

Keeping PiP alive during third-party video recording (camera capture)
I’m building a teleprompter-style app that relies on Picture in Picture. PiP starts correctly on device. Everything works — until another app (e.g. TikTok / Instagram) starts active video recording. When camera capture begins in the foreground app, iOS terminates my PiP session. Some teleprompter apps appear to keep PiP active while recording in other apps, so I’m trying to understand the recommended architectural pattern for this scenario. Is there a documented approach or best practice to keep PiP stable during third-party camera capture? Looking specifically for guidance on the correct AVKit / AVAudioSession configuration for this use case.

Wi-Fi Access Point Not Reconnecting While AVAudioSession Is Active
We’ve encountered a reproducible issue where the iPhone fails to reconnect to a Wi-Fi access point under the following conditions: The device is connected to a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network. A Bluetooth audio accessory is connected (e.g. headset). AVAudioSession is active (such as during a voice call or when using the Voice Memos app). The user moves away from the access point, causing a disconnect. Upon returning within range, the access point is no longer recognized or reconnected while AVAudioSession remains active. However, if the Bluetooth device is disconnected or the AVAudioSession is deactivated, the Wi-Fi access point is immediately recognized again. We confirmed this behavior not only in my app but also using Apple's built-in Voice Memos app, suggesting this is not specific to our implementation. It appears that the Wi-Fi system deprioritizes reconnection while AVAudioSession is engaged. Could this be by design? Or is this a known issue or limitation with Wi-Fi and AVAudioSession interaction? Test Environment: Device: iPhone 13 mini iOS: 17.5.1 Wi-Fi: 2.4GHz band Accessories: Bluetooth headset We’d appreciate clarification on whether this is expected behavior or a bug. Thank you!

AVAudioSession automatically sets the tablet audio volume to 50% when recording audio.
Environment→ ・Device: iPad 10th generation ・OS:**iOS18.3.2 I'm using AVAudioSession to record sound in my application. But I recently came to realize that when the app starts a recording session on a tablet, OS automatically sets the tablet volume to 50% and when after recording ends, it doesn't change back to the previous volume level before starting the recording. So I would like to know whether this is an OS default behavior or a bug? If it's a default behavior, I much appreciate if I can get a link to the documentation.

coreaudiod display sleep

Unexpected Ambisonics format

Core Audio Tap: per-device attenuation vs. number of stereo output pairs — how to get unattenuated “raw” app streams?
Hi all, I’ve implemented the new Core Audio Tap API (AudioHardwareCreateProcessTap with CATapDescription) and I’m seeing consistent level attenuation that scales with the number of stereo output pairs exposed by the target device. What I observe Device with 4 stereo pairs (8 outs) → tap shows −12.04 dB relative to source. True 2-ch devices (built-in speakers, AirPods) → ~0 dB attenuation. The attenuation appears regardless of whether I: Create a global (default-output) tap via initStereoGlobalTapButExcludeProcesses: Or create a per-process/per-device tap via initWithProcesses:andDeviceUID:withStream: Additionally, the routing choice inside the sending app matters: App output to “System/Default Output” → I often see no attenuation. App output directly to a multi-out interface (e.g., RME Fireface) → I see the pair-count-scaled attenuation. I can query Core Audio for the number of output channels/pairs and gain-compensate (+20·log10(N_pairs) dB) and that matches my measurements for many cases. However, this compensation is not universally correct because it seems to depend on where each process routes its audio (Default Output vs. direct device), even when those processes are included in the same tap aggregate. Question Is there a supported way to obtain the raw, unattenuated streams for all processes through the Tap API—i.e., to bypass this automatic headroom/attenuation behavior entirely? If this attenuation is expected by design: Is there a documented rule for when it applies (global vs. device taps, per-process taps, stream selection, etc.)? Is there a property/flag to disable it, or a reliable, official method to compute the exact compensation (beyond counting stereo pairs)? Any guidance on ensuring consistent levels when multiple processes route differently (Default Output vs. direct device) but are captured by the same tap? Environment API: AudioHardwareCreateProcessTap + CATapDescription Devices: built-in output (2-ch), RME Fireface (8+ outs / 4+ stereo pairs) Behavior reproducible with both global and per-process/per-device tap descriptions. Accessory not supported by this device
Hi, I've had a new deck installed in my car for about 1.5 weeks. I'm having compatibility issues with my 15PM. It happens both wired and wirelessly, I get the error "Accessory not supported by this device". It used to happen all the time, now it's 50/50. Sometimes it works. I've removed and added Bluetooth multiple times on phone and deck, I bought a belkin usb-c to usb-a cable today and it seems to fix it but the problem comes back. I've changed the setting "FaceID and passcode-allow access when locked-accessories." The car stereo guy reckons it's definitely an issue with the phone not the deck, I'm inclined to believe him since the error states "by this device". Any advice appreciated.

AVPlayerItem. externalMetadata not available
According to the documentation (https://developer.apple.com/documentation/avfoundation/avplayeritem/externalmetadata), AVPlayerItem should have an externalMetadata property. However it does not appear to be visible to my app. When I try, I get: Value of type 'AVPlayerItem' has no member 'externalMetadata' Documentation states iOS 12.2+; I am building with a minimum deployment target of iOS 18. AVAssetResourceLoaderDelegate for radio stream
Hi everyone, I’m trying to use AVAssetResourceLoaderDelegate to handle a live radio stream (e.g. Icecast/HTTP stream). My goal is to have access to the last 30 seconds of audio data during playback, so I can analyze it for specific audio patterns in near-real-time. I’ve implemented a custom resource loader that works fine for podcasts and static files, where the file size and content length are known. However, for infinite live streams, my current implementation stops receiving new loading requests after the first one is served. As a result, the playback either stalls or fails to continue. Has anyone successfully used AVAssetResourceLoaderDelegate with a continuous radio stream? Or maybe you can suggest betterapproach for buffering and analyzing live audio? Any tips, examples, or advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Play Audio and Recognize Speech in Car
Hello, I'm trying to determine the best/recommended AVAudioSession configuration (i.e category, mode, and options) for the following use-case. Essentially, I'd like to switch between periods of playing an audio file and then recognizing speech. The audio file is typically speech and I don't intend for playback and speech recognition to occur simultaneously. I'd like for the user to sill be able to interact with Siri and I'd like for it to work with CarPlay where navigation prompts can occur. I would assume the category to use is 'playAndRecord', but I'm not sure if it's better to just set that once for the entire lifecycle, or set to 'playback' for audio file playback and then switch to 'playAndRecord' for speech recognition . I'm also not sure on the best 'mode' and 'options' to set. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Can a Location-Based Audio AR Experience Run in the Background on iOS?
Hi everyone! I’ve developed a location-based Audio AR app in Unity with FMOD &amp; Resonance Audio and AirPods Pro Head-Tracking to create a ubiquitous augmented soundscape experience. Think of it as an audio version of Pokémon Go, but with a more precise location requirement to ensure spatial audio is placed correctly. I want this experience to run in the background on iOS, but from what I’ve gathered, it seems Unity doesn’t support this well. So, I’m considering developing a Swift version instead. Since this is primarily for research purposes, privacy concerns are not a major issue in my case. However, I’ve come across some potential challenges: Real-time precise location updates – Can iOS provide fully instantaneous, high-accuracy location updates in the background? Continuous real-time data processing – Can an app continuously process spatial audio, head-tracking, and location data while running in the background? I’m not sure if newer iOS versions have improved in these areas or if there are workarounds to achieve this. Would this kind of experience be feasible to run in the background on iOS? Any insights or pointers would be greatly appreciated! I’m very new to iOS development, so apologies if this is a basic question. Thanks in advance!

ioreg AVBControllerState - AVB/EAV Mode
Hello. To determine wether "AVB/EAV Mode" of a AV-capable network interfaces is turned on or off I query the IO registry and evaluate the property "AVBControllerState". I was wondering if this is the "correct" approach and if there is anything known about the values for this property? Network interfaces without AV capability may also carry this property (e.g.: for my WiFi adapter the value of 1) whereas the value for interfaces with AV capability can be 0 and 3. At least as far as I could observe with my limited amount of test devices at hand. Is it safe to assume that a value of 3 means this feature is turned on, 0 that it is turned off and ignore values of 1? Is there another approach to get to know the status of the "AVB/EAV Mode"? Destroy MIDIUMPMutableEndpoint again?
Is there a way to destroy MIDIUMPMutableEndpoint again? In my app, the user has a setting to enable and disable MIDI 2.0. If MIDI 2.0 should not be supported (or if iOS version < 18), it creates a virtual destination and a virtual source. And if MIDI 2.0 should be enabled, it instead creates a MIDIUMPMutableEndpoint, which itself creates the virtual destination and source automatically. So here is my problem: I didn't find any way to destroy the MIDIUMPMutableEndpoint again. There is a method to disable it (setEnabled:NO), but that doesn't destroy or hide the virtual destination and source. So when the user turns MIDI 2.0 support off, I will have two virtual destinations and sources, and cannot get rid of the 2.0 ones. What is the correct way to get rid of the MIDIUMPMutableEndpoint once it is created?

Keeping PiP alive during third-party video recording (camera capture)
I’m building a teleprompter-style app that relies on Picture in Picture. PiP starts correctly on device. Everything works — until another app (e.g. TikTok / Instagram) starts active video recording. When camera capture begins in the foreground app, iOS terminates my PiP session. Some teleprompter apps appear to keep PiP active while recording in other apps, so I’m trying to understand the recommended architectural pattern for this scenario. Is there a documented approach or best practice to keep PiP stable during third-party camera capture? Looking specifically for guidance on the correct AVKit / AVAudioSession configuration for this use case.

Wi-Fi Access Point Not Reconnecting While AVAudioSession Is Active
We’ve encountered a reproducible issue where the iPhone fails to reconnect to a Wi-Fi access point under the following conditions: The device is connected to a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network. A Bluetooth audio accessory is connected (e.g. headset). AVAudioSession is active (such as during a voice call or when using the Voice Memos app). The user moves away from the access point, causing a disconnect. Upon returning within range, the access point is no longer recognized or reconnected while AVAudioSession remains active. However, if the Bluetooth device is disconnected or the AVAudioSession is deactivated, the Wi-Fi access point is immediately recognized again. We confirmed this behavior not only in my app but also using Apple's built-in Voice Memos app, suggesting this is not specific to our implementation. It appears that the Wi-Fi system deprioritizes reconnection while AVAudioSession is engaged. Could this be by design? Or is this a known issue or limitation with Wi-Fi and AVAudioSession interaction? Test Environment: Device: iPhone 13 mini iOS: 17.5.1 Wi-Fi: 2.4GHz band Accessories: Bluetooth headset We’d appreciate clarification on whether this is expected behavior or a bug. Thank you!

AVAudioSession automatically sets the tablet audio volume to 50% when recording audio.
Environment→ ・Device: iPad 10th generation ・OS:**iOS18.3.2 I'm using AVAudioSession to record sound in my application. But I recently came to realize that when the app starts a recording session on a tablet, OS automatically sets the tablet volume to 50% and when after recording ends, it doesn't change back to the previous volume level before starting the recording. So I would like to know whether this is an OS default behavior or a bug? If it's a default behavior, I much appreciate if I can get a link to the documentation.
