Level Networking on watchOS for Duplex audio streaming
I did watch WWDC 2019 Session 716 and understand that an active audio session is key to unlocking low‑level networking on watchOS. I’m configuring my audio session and engine as follows: private func configureAudioSession(completion: @escaping (Bool) -> Void) { let audioSession = AVAudioSession.sharedInstance() do { try audioSession.setCategory(.playAndRecord, mode: .voiceChat, options: []) try audioSession.setActive(true, options: .notifyOthersOnDeactivation) // Retrieve sample rate and configure the audio format. let sampleRate = audioSession.sampleRate print("Active hardware sample rate: \(sampleRate)") audioFormat = AVAudioFormat(standardFormatWithSampleRate: sampleRate, channels: 1) // Configure the audio engine. audioInputNode = audioEngine.inputNode audioEngine.attach(audioPlayerNode) audioEngine.connect(audioPlayerNode, to: audioEngine.mainMixerNode, format: audioFormat) try audioEngine.start() completion(true) } catch { print("Error configuring audio session: \(error.localizedDescription)") completion(false) } } private func setupUDPConnection() { let parameters = NWParameters.udp parameters.includePeerToPeer = true connection = NWConnection(host: "***.***.xxxxx.***", port: 0000, using: parameters) setupNWConnectionHandlers() } private func setupTCPConnection() { let parameters = NWParameters.tcp connection = NWConnection(host: "***.***.xxxxx.***", port: 0000, using: parameters) setupNWConnectionHandlers() } private func setupWebSocketConnection() { guard let url = URL(string: "ws://***.***.xxxxx.***:0000") else { print("Invalid WebSocket URL") return } let session = URLSession(configuration: .default) webSocketTask = session.webSocketTask(with: url) webSocketTask?.resume() print("WebSocket connection initiated") sendAudioToServer() receiveDataFromServer() sendWebSocketPing(after: 0.6) } private func setupNWConnectionHandlers() { connection?.stateUpdateHandler = { [weak self] state in DispatchQueue.main.async { switch state { case .ready: print("Connected (NWConnection)") self?.isConnected = true self?.failToConnect = false self?.receiveDataFromServer() self?.sendAudioToServer() case .waiting(let error), .failed(let error): print("Connection error: \(error.localizedDescription)") DispatchQueue.main.asyncAfter(deadline: .now() + 2) { self?.setupNetwork() } case .cancelled: print("NWConnection cancelled") self?.isConnected = false default: break } } } connection?.start(queue: .main) } Duplex in this context refers to two-way audio transmission simultaneously recording and sending audio while also receiving and playing back incoming audio, similar to a VoIP/SIP call. The setup works fine on the simulator, which suggests that the core logic is correct. However, since the simulator doesn’t fully replicate WatchOS hardware behavior especially for audio sessions and networking issues might arise when running on a real device. The problem likely lies in either the Watch’s actual hardware limitations, permission constraints, or specific audio session configurations. I am reaching out to seek further assistance regarding the challenges I've been experiencing with establishing a UDP, TCP & web socket connection on watchOS using NWConnection for duplex audio streaming. Despite implementing the recommendations provided earlier, I am still encountering difficulties From what I can see, your implementation is focused on streaming audio playback with the server. In my case, I'm looking for a slightly different approach: I want to capture audio and send buffers of a specific size to the server while playing audio simultaneously, essentially achieving full duplex streaming similar to a VOIP call. Additionally, I’d like to ensure that if no external audio route is connected, the Apple Watch speaker is used by default. Any thoughts or insights on adapting this setup for those requirements would be very welcome.

HDR video metadata
On an iOS 18 phone, I use AVCaptureSession to capture HDR with x420 format. The output CMSampleBuffer is HLG colorspace, the propagated attachments contain kCVImageBufferAmbientViewingEnvironmentKey and kCVImageBufferSceneIlluminationKey. Now I use CAMetalLayer to render the CVPixelBuffer to the screen, but the brightness is brighter than AVSampleBufferDisplayLayer. Here is my code. - (void)_updateColorSpaceIfNeed:(CVPixelBufferRef)pixelBuffer { CAMetalLayer *layer = (CAMetalLayer *)_mtkView.layer; if (![layer isKindOfClass:CAMetalLayer.class]) return; layer.wantsExtendedDynamicRangeContent = YES; CFDataRef ambientViewingEnvironment = (CFDataRef)CVBufferCopyAttachment(pixelBuffer, kCVImageBufferAmbientViewingEnvironmentKey, NULL); NSData *data = (__bridge NSData *)ambientViewingEnvironment; if (ambientViewingEnvironment) CFRelease(ambientViewingEnvironment); CAEDRMetadata *metadata = [CAEDRMetadata HLGMetadataWithAmbientViewingEnvironment:data]; // CAEDRMetadata *metadata = [CAEDRMetadata HLGMetadata]; layer.EDRMetadata = metadata; layer.pixelFormat = MTLPixelFormatRGBA16Float; CGColorSpaceRef colorspace = CGColorSpaceCreateWithName(kCGColorSpaceITUR_2100_HLG); layer.colorspace = colorspace; if (colorspace) CGColorSpaceRelease(colorspace); } Why does the CAEDRMetadata class have "HLGMetadataWithAmbientViewingEnvironment:" and "HLGMetadata" methods, but does not provide the "HLGMetadataWithAmbientViewingEnvironment:sceneIllumination" method? I want to know how kCVImageBufferAmbientViewingEnvironmentKey and kCVImageBufferSceneIlluminationKey affect tone mapping. Is there any documentation I can refer to?

Slow Image Retrieval Using requestImageForAsset:targetSize:contentMode:options:resultHandler:
Hello, I am experiencing slow image retrieval when using the requestImageForAsset:targetSize:contentMode:options:resultHandler: method in my application. The delay is significantly impacting the performance of my app. Here are the details of my implementation: for (PHAsset *asset in assets) { @autoreleasepool { PHImageManager *imageManager = [PHImageManager defaultManager]; PHImageRequestOptions *options = [[PHImageRequestOptions alloc] init]; options.synchronous = YES; options.deliveryMode = PHImageRequestOptionsDeliveryModeFastFormat; options.resizeMode = PHImageRequestOptionsResizeModeNone; [imageManager requestImageForAsset:asset targetSize:CGSizeMake(100, 100) contentMode:PHImageContentModeAspectFill options:options resultHandler:^(UIImage *thumbnail, NSDictionary *info) { CameraRollCellDto *cellDto = [[CameraRollCellDto alloc] init]; cellDto.index = index; cellDto.thumbnail = thumbnail; cellDto.propertyDate = asset.creationDate; if (self.segmentedTorikomi.selectedSegmentIndex == SEG_INDEX_IKKATSU) { cellDto.isSelected = YES; } else { cellDto.isSelected = NO; } [list addObject:cellDto]; }]; index++; } } Has anyone else encountered this issue? Are there any known solutions or optimizations that can help improve the speed of image retrieval using this method? Thank you for your assistance.

Best approach for auto-play when using AVPlayer
Hello! I am trying to determine the best approach with AVPlayer for implementing auto-play, that is, playback that automatically starts without user initiation. Ideally this would work for both local and streaming audio. My current approach is using KVO and the status on an AVPlayerItem equal to readyToPlay to do this, but I was wondering if there was a better property or state to use, or, alternatively, whether this use case may already be handled when automaticallyWaitsToMinimizeStalling is true, so that I could simply write: player.replaceCurrentItem(with: AVPlayerItem(url: streamingUrl)) player.rate = 1 or let playerItem = AVPlayerItem(url: streamingUrl) player = AVPlayer(playerItem: playerItem) player.rate = 1 and expect the item to be auto-played when ready. In the context of user-initiated playback, I've typically seen code that makes a button's enabled state contingent on player.currentItem.duration, e.g. in AVFoundationSimplePlayer-iOS. On the other hand, AVAutoWait, which utilizes automaticallyWaitsToMinimizeStalling, does not seem to do this. As a side note, I am not using an AVQueuePlayer.

Custom Share Desination stopped working in FCP X 11
We integrate with FCP X using a custom share destination and the Apple Script interface. This has been working fine until the the recent version 11 update of FCP X. With this update we are no longer receiving the open event when the export has completed. We get the apple event to creat the Asset and the file is exported to the location we set in the response. There is just no open event after that. I suspect something is wrong with our scripting support but I have no idea what or how to troubleshoot. This works fine in 10.8.1 and below.

Changing playback rate of AVQueuePlayer not working for some Airplay devices.
Hi. I am working on an audio app for iOS. I have implemented UI and handling which allows the user to change playback rate of audio. When the user selects a different rate, I update the rate property on my AVQueuePlayer. This is working well on device. When I use Airplay, it works for some devices and not for others. Some devices won't change playback rate and will always play at 1x speed. Is this possibly a limitation of those 3rd-party devices? Or is there something I'm missing/should check? Would love to get playback rate changes working across all Airplay devices with our app. Kind regards.

AVAudioSession automatically sets the tablet audio volume to 50% when recording audio.
Environment→ ・Device: iPad 10th generation ・OS:**iOS18.3.2 I'm using AVAudioSession to record sound in my application. But I recently came to realize that when the app starts a recording session on a tablet, OS automatically sets the tablet volume to 50% and when after recording ends, it doesn't change back to the previous volume level before starting the recording. So I would like to know whether this is an OS default behavior or a bug? If it's a default behavior, I much appreciate if I can get a link to the documentation.

MusicKit - Skipping Forwards or Backwards does not update
Hello everyone, I am working on an app that allows you to review your own music using Apple Music. Currently I am running into an issue with the skipping forwards and backwards outside of the app. How it should work: When skipping forward or backwards on the lock or home screen of an iPhone, the next or previous song on an album should play and the information should change to reflect that in the app. If you play a song in Apple Music, you can see a Now Playing view in the lock screen. When you skip forward or backwards, it will do either action and it would reflect that when you see a little frequency icon on artwork image of a song. What it's doing: When skipping forward or backwards on the lock or home screen of an iPhone, the next or previous song is reflected outside of the app, but not in the app. When skipping a song outside of the app, it works correctly to head to the next song. But when I return to the app, it is not reflected NOTE: I am not using MusicKit variables such as Track, Album to display the songs. Since I want to grab the songs and review them I need a rating so I created my own that grabs the MusicItemID, name, artist(s), etc. NOTE: I am using ApplicationMusicPlayer.shared Is there a way to get the song to reflect in my app? (If its easier, a simple example of it would be nice. No need to create an entire xprod file)

How to display artwork images from MusicKit with UIKit?
In SwiftUI there is a built-in component for displaying album artworks called Artwork but there is no equivalent for UIKit. My current approach is to use the .url() method to read image's URL and download the image or read it from the disk but the performance is much worse than it was previously with MPMediaItem's artworkImage method. let artworkQueue = DispatchQueue( label: "MusicKit-ArtworkQueue", qos: .default, attributes: .concurrent ) let artworkSemaphore = DispatchSemaphore(value: 5) extension Song { func artworkImage(for size: CGSize, completion: @escaping (UIImage?) -> Void) { artworkQueue.async { artworkSemaphore.wait() defer { artworkSemaphore.signal() } let imageURL = artwork?.url( width: Int(size.width), height: Int(size.height) ) // I hate doing this as it might very well break in the future guard let imageURL, imageURL.scheme == "musicKit" else { return completion(nil) } guard let imageData = try? Data(contentsOf: imageURL), let image = UIImage(data: imageData) else { return completion(nil) } completion(image) } } } I really dislike this approach because it feels hacky but somewhat works. You might ask what's the semaphore for? Well, without it I could notice that MusicKit was choking and after reading too many artworks at once. Can someone from Apple please provide us with an example on how to use MusicKit with UIKit properly? Ideally (IMO) we would have a method defined on Song and other MusicKit structures that returns the image for us, just like MPMediaItem had the .artwork() method. It would make our lives so much easier.

Capacitor app on iOS inline video stops
Hello, I’m experiencing an issue with video playback in my Javascript (SvelteKit) application using Capacitor. The video plays and loops correctly on Android and web browsers (including Safari) but stops unexpectedly after a few iterations on iOS native App. <video src={videoPath} autoplay muted loop playsinline class="h-auto w-full max-w-full object-cover"></video> Has anyone encountered a similar issue or have insights into what might be causing this behavior on iOS? Any suggestions or workarounds would be greatly appreciated. Maybe it has something to do with the iOS power saving policy? Thank you in advance for your help!

resources for image cleanup
What is the purpose of AdjustmentsSecondary.data included in the PHAssetResource for a cleaned-up image? When using creationRequest.addResource, what should be set for the PHAssetResourceType? If I set the PHAssetResourceType as follows to create an asset, it appears correctly in the camera roll. However, when attempting to edit the image in the Photos app, the app crashes: IMG_5332.HEIC → .photo FullSizeRender.HEIC → .fullSizePhoto Adjustments.plist → .adjustmentData AdjustmentsSecondary.data → .adjustmentData

Above Xcode16 operation project, in the project use AVPictureInPictureController opportunities (PIP) function open system blackout
I found that when the development tool above Xcode16 ran my app, I opened the suspended inscription function, and then opened the system camera, the content in the suspended window would not be displayed, and the suspended window would have a black screen. However, this phenomenon does not appear on Xcode15.4 development tools, it is the same code, I do not know why

Memory Leak in AVAudioPlayer in Simulator only
I have a memory leak, when using AVAudioPlayer. I managed to narrow down the issue into a very simple app, which code I paste in at the end. The memory leak start immediately when I start playing sound, but only in the emylator. On the real iPhone there is no memory leak. The memory leak on the Simulator looks like this: import SwiftUI import AVFoundation struct ContentView_Audio: View { var sound: AVAudioPlayer? init() { guard let path = Bundle.main.path(forResource: "cd201", ofType: "mp3") else { return } let url = URL(fileURLWithPath: path) do { try AVAudioSession.sharedInstance().setCategory(.playback, mode: .default, options: [.mixWithOthers]) } catch { return } do { try AVAudioSession.sharedInstance().setActive(true) } catch { return } do { sound = try AVAudioPlayer(contentsOf: url) } catch { return } } var body: some View { HStack { Button { playSound() } label: { ZStack { Circle() .fill(.mint.opacity(0.3)) .frame(width: 44, height: 44) .shadow(radius: 8) Image(systemName: "play.fill") .resizable() .frame(width: 20, height: 20) } } .padding() Button { stopSound() } label: { ZStack { Circle() .fill(.mint.opacity(0.3)) .frame(width: 44, height: 44) .shadow(radius: 8) Image(systemName: "stop.fill") .resizable() .frame(width: 20, height: 20) } } .padding() } } private func playSound() { guard sound != nil else { return } sound?.volume = 1 // sound?.numberOfLoops = -1 sound?.play() } func stopSound() { sound?.stop() } }

How to match music with shazamkit for Android ?
Hi all, i can successfully match music using shazamkit on Apple using SwiftUI, a simple app that let user to load an audio file and exctracts the relative match, while i am unable to match music using shamzamkit on Android. I am trying to make the same simple app but i cannot match music as i get MATCH_ATTEMPT_FAILED every time i try to. I don't know what i am doing wrong but the shazam part in the kotlin Android code is in this method : suspend fun processAudioFileInBackground( filePath: String, developerTokenProvider: DeveloperTokenProvider ) = withContext(Dispatchers.IO) { val bufferSize = 1024 * 1024 val audioFile = FileInputStream(filePath) val byteBuffer = ByteBuffer.allocate(bufferSize) byteBuffer.order(ByteOrder.LITTLE_ENDIAN) var bytesRead: Int while (audioFile.read(byteBuffer.array()).also { bytesRead = it } != -1) { val signatureGenerator = (ShazamKit.createSignatureGenerator(AudioSampleRateInHz.SAMPLE_RATE_44100) as ShazamKitResult.Success).data signatureGenerator.append(byteBuffer.array(), bytesRead, System.currentTimeMillis()) val signature = signatureGenerator.generateSignature() println("Signature: ${signature.durationInMs}") val catalog = ShazamKit.createShazamCatalog(developerTokenProvider, Locale.ENGLISH) val session = (ShazamKit.createSession(catalog) as ShazamKitResult.Success).data val matchResult = session.match(signature) println("MatchResult : $matchResult") setMatchResult(matchResult) byteBuffer.clear() } audioFile.close() } I noticed that changing Locale in catalog creation results in different result as i get NoMatch without exception. Can you please help me with this?

Camera USB
am new to using Swift for a Mac Application. I am trying to control an external UVC-compliant camera focus and other capabilities. However, I'm having trouble with this and don't know where to start. I have downloaded an application from the App Store and it can control the focus and other capabilities. I've tried IOKit but this seems to be complicated and this does not return any capabilities or control the camera. I also tried AVfoundation and was able to open the camera, but using the following code did not work for me. as a device.isFocusPointOfInterestSupported returns false and without checking the app crashes. @IBAction func focusChanged(_ sender: NSSlider) { do { guard let device = videoDevice else { return } try device.lockForConfiguration() // Check if focus mode and point of interest are supported if device.isFocusModeSupported(.locked) { device.focusMode = .locked } if device.isFocusPointOfInterestSupported { // Map the slider value (0.0 to 1.0) to the focus point's X coordinate let focusX = CGFloat(sender.doubleValue) let focusPoint = CGPoint(x: focusX, y: 0.5) // Y coordinate is typically 0.5 (centered vertically) device.focusPointOfInterest = focusPoint } else { print("Focus point of interest is not supported on this device.") } device.unlockForConfiguration() // Log focus settings print("Focus point: \(device.focusPointOfInterest)") print("Focus mode: \(device.focusMode.rawValue)") } catch { print("Error adjusting focus: \(error)") } Any help or advice is much appreciated.

Notification interruptions
My app Balletrax is a music player for people to use while they teach ballet. Used to be you could silence notifications during use, but now the customer seems to have to know how to use Focus mode, remember to turn it on and off, and have to check the notifications one does and doesn't want to use. Is there no way to silence all notifications when the app is in use?
