WKWebview of iOS 18 includes Safari browser. When playing videos, some videos show "NotSupportedError: The operation is not supported.", but it is normal on iOS15 devices. The video link is as follows. Even if it is downloaded and referenced locally in HTML, it cannot be played, so it is ruled out that it is a network problem.

"We have a multi-tenant EdTech platform serving over 1500 clients, each with a unique domain (e.g., client1.eduapp.com). We use WKWebView in a native shell. Due to WKAppBoundDomains restriction, we can't dynamically list all domains. How can we support dynamic tenants while maintaining cookie persistence"
"Can Apple suggest a best practice or alternative approach for apps using WebView/PWA shell architecture across multiple client domains?"
Problem:
We cannot predefine all 1500 domains in WKAppBoundDomains due to limitations.
As a result:
Service workers fail to register, breaking PWA functionality Ex: Offline.

I want use the Safari Extension to decorate the window.fetch function, But No matter how I try, I can't get the fetch function to execute correctly. I was going through the documentation: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/safariservices/using-injected-style-sheets-and-scripts
and found this sentence:
"Injected scripts have an implied namespace — you don’t have to worry about your variable or function names conflicting with those of the website author, nor can a website author call functions in your extension. In other words, injected scripts and scripts that you include in the webpage run in isolated worlds, with no access to each other’s functions or data."
Does this mean I can't modify the window object in the content script just like a Chrome extension does with the webpage?
BTW, In chrome I use chrome.scripting.executeScript API, and in
plasmo I just use world: "MAIN" content script's config to achieved this feature.
Actually this is a duplicate for https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/106537 but in web-specific forums section.
Is there any video/audio codec best practices, guides, recommendations for app/web developers for best performance (take advantage from HW acceleration), power consumption saving? What are officially supported media containers? What are video encoding profiles, video dimensions, frame rates?
The only official source I have found is https://developer.apple.com/documentation/webkit/delivering-video-content-for-safari?language=objc. But h264 is pretty old. I experimentally found that the VP9 video format is also supported on iOS newer versions. But is this a requirement? Сan i be sure that the video will play on all devices?
My goal is to provide web media content (which will be rendered in my application using WKWebView API) that will be supported by most devices (both iOS and MacOS), takes advantage of such features as hardware decode acceleration and be efficient.
Any hints/info is highly appreciated. Best regards.
We are building a Safari web extension utilising native messaging, to send messages to the Swift native part of the app. We sometimes experience, that the beginRequest handler is executed multiple times, at the same time.
We have a special part of the code in the handler, that must be run only once. Because it uses NS defaults storage, and also because it calls our servers. We have tried to use a serial dispatch queue, as well as other locking and mutex techniques, to no success.
We suspect that the instances of the handler are isolated in a way, that these locks don’t work (maybe they don’t share memory?). But we are not sure. When looking at os_logs from the handlers, they all share the same PID.
Has anyone experienced anything similar and can shed some light on what's going on?
I have a Safari extension that plays audio via the javascript AudioContext API. It was working fine under iOS 17 and is now broken under iOS 18. It does not play audio at all.
I've tried in both the iOS 18 public beta and the iOS 18.1 developer beta. It is broken in both of them.
I've also created Feedback item FB15170620 which has a url attached to a page I created which demonstrates the issue.

I want to operate Safari using Selenium. For this purpose, I would like to set the UserAgent to iOS and change the viewport. What should I do? The following is the content programmed with the Chrome driver. I would like to achieve this using the Safari driver.
import time,os
import chromedriver_binary
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver import Safari
from selenium.webdriver.safari.options import Options as SafariOptions
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
from selenium.webdriver.support.select import Select
from selenium.webdriver.chrome import service
# selenium 4
from selenium.webdriver.chrome.service import Service as ChromeService
from selenium.webdriver.chrome.options import Options
from webdriver_manager.chrome import ChromeDriverManager
driver = webdriver.Chrome(service=ChromeService(ChromeDriverManager().install()),options = chrome_options)
# iPhone 13 params
viewport = {
"width": 390,
"height": 844,
"deviceScaleFactor": 3,
"mobile": True
}
#Chrome setting
ua = "Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 15_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/605.1.15 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/15.4 Mobile/15E148 Safari/604.1"
driver.execute_cdp_cmd("Emulation.setDeviceMetricsOverride", viewport)
# change user agent
driver.execute_cdp_cmd("Emulation.setUserAgentOverride", {"userAgent": ua})
# ページにアクセス
driver.get("https://hogehoge")
When the “Use Strong Password?” dialog appears and I select “Not Now” to manually enter my own password, the password I type is displayed in plain text instead of being masked. Since the input field is of type="password", the entered characters should be hidden as is standard for password inputs.
Is there a way to prevent this behavior and ensure that the password is properly hidden even after dismissing the strong password suggestion dialog?

Good morning fellow developers,
For a while i am struggeling with providing sound to my users on IOS (Safari on Mac is no problem and every other device is not a problem) (we have an existing phone system and made a chat as well), the case is very simple: the notification sound is only for users who are logged in and online for chat.
i have tried multiple things:
Audio play with javascript (start with mute, play when user clicks a button so the sound is familiar, play when user clicks a button and directly pause it and continue when needed)
PWA: the dashboard has been made available as pwa and notifications using google firebase. The popup does show for notifcations to be allowed (and receiving the notifications does work on any other device) But any IOS device cannot register.
The information i find is that notifications were supported with 16.4 or higher but also have been deprecated around IOS 17, auto play is not allowed.
We have an app in development for our product as well were we will have a notification which will handle this, but that is not the solution we can use now.
Long story, short question: is it still somehow possible to push a notification to the user when using the PWA or play a sound in the browser (based on an ajax function). The app/website wont be in the background, so it will always be on the screen.
Languages we use: html/javascript (mostly vanilla)/php
I am currently developing an app using WKWebView.
In iOS 17, Apple introduced ProxyConfiguration, and I have two questions regarding its usage:
Is there a way to use ProxyConfiguration to distinguish between HTTP and HTTPS traffic?
I have reviewed the documentation but couldn’t find a clear method for this.
As an alternative approach, I am attempting to determine the request scheme within WKWebView and switch proxyConfigurations just before loading the request.
My current implementation sends requests to hoge_a by default and switches to hoge_b only for HTTP traffic.
if #available(iOS 17.0, *) {
if URLString.contains("http:") {
webView.configuration.websiteDataStore.proxyConfigurations = [hoge_b]
}
}
webView.load(request)
if #available(iOS 17.0, *) {
if URLString.contains("http:") {
webView.configuration.websiteDataStore.proxyConfigurations = [hoge_a]
}
}
2. Since I modify proxyConfigurations every time webView.load(request) is called, are there any potential issues or concerns with this approach?
I would appreciate any insights you may have on either of these questions.
My Mac app and its Safari web extension share an app group, and I want to notify the web extension native process when the app makes a change to the app group NSUserDefaults, but I can't find a good way to do this.
According to the documentation, "You can use key-value observing to register observers for specific keys of interest in order to be notified of all updates, regardless of whether changes are made within or outside the current process." In my testing, however, this doesn't work in the web extension process. I'm using NSUserDefaults addObserver forKeyPath, but observeValueForKeyPath never gets called.
I've also tried NSDistributedNotificationCenter, but the web extension process doesn't receive the notifications sent by the main app.
Are either of these supposed to work? If not, are there any alternatives?
Hi,
We have a native application with a webview part.
When we open the app, we load webview resources in a false foreground. The webview communicates with the native part to query local variables, among other things. We have noticed that for the past few weeks, when the biometric component is presented to enter the fingerprint or faceId, while the component is displayed, the webview does not respond.
We do not see the calls made by the webview, nor can we respond to them. Even if you open the Safari debugger, the webview does not respond UNTIL you close the biometric component in the native part.
This has created a big problem in our app, and we wanted to know if it is an issue you had on your radar.
Thank you very much.
Hi,
I’m encountering an unexpected issue in Safari. Specifically, navigator.clipboard.writeText() fails when called from a content script in my extension immediately after sending a message to background.js while it works fine in Chrome and Firefox. Is this expected?
Environment
Safari
18.2 (20620.1.16.11.8)
Technology Preview 210
macOS Sequoia 15.2 (24C101)
Example
This is a minimal reproducible example, which adds a button to example.com:
https://github.com/mshibanami/ClipboarAPIIssueExample
Below is the related code:
// content.js
copyButton.addEventListener('click', async () => {
// 👇️ This call seems to trigger the issue
await chrome.runtime.sendMessage({});
try {
await navigator.clipboard.writeText(text);
alert(`✅ Copied '${text}' to clipboard!`);
} catch (err) {
alert(err + '\n\n' + `navigator.userActivation.isActive: ${navigator.userActivation.isActive}`);
}
});
// background.js
chrome.runtime.onMessage.addListener(() => { });
When I click the button, I expect the text to be copied successfully. However, I receive an error in Safari.:
Interestingly, if I remove chrome.runtime.sendMessage(), the clipboard operation works without any problems. Also, note that navigator.userActivation.isActive is true, which might mean it's not related to the User Activation API.
Misc.
This might be related to another question I posted here:
https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/772275
Hi, I have tried to research how safari clean up the cookie when it reaches maximum limit (4kb) on internet but cannot find a good answer. Anyone can help me to give an answer for this question? Thanks in advance

I am a developer working on a Safari extension that handles video playback, and I’ve encountered an issue with Safari version 18.2. When I open the developer tools to inspect the browser, videos fail to play as expected. It worked well on safari version 18.1.
Details:
Safari Version: 18.2
Operating System: macOS Sequoia v15.2
Additional Information:
I’ve tested the extension with various video formats and sites.
Clearing the cache and disabling other extensions did not resolve the issue.
There are no error messages displayed in the console related to the extension.
If I close inspecting, then extension(video playback) works well.
I would appreciate any insights or suggestions on how to address this issue, as it impacts the functionality of my extension.
Thank you for your help!
I'm building a share extension for my app when I noticed something weird.
When I open a mobile URL (URLs with "m." like m.randomsite.org) on iOS using a browser (I'm using Safari & Chrome) and then try to share it, what will be share is the URL without the "m." (i.e. randomsite.org)
This messes up with my app since I'm not getting the real URL that I'm viewing using the browser.
I don't think it has something to do with my app since even selecting "Copy" when sharing will result in the altered URL too.
So far this is happening on both iOS 17 and 18. Does someone know whether this is a bug from iOS or not? I don't think this is a Safari bug since I noticed the same thing on Chrome as well
